After two years of inactivity, the City Limits Bar and Grill on Juniper Avenue in Slayton is open for business! The large restaurant and outdoor patio have been a favorite venue for delicious meals, receptions and parties for many years and the new owners and managers are excited to welcome everyone back. Currently open on Wednesdays through Sundays with a basic menu, they look forward to expanding hours and choices in the next few months.

Andy and Amy Anderson of Slayton purchased the restaurant about six months ago. Andy has been trucking for many years, most recently with Reinhart, a food supplier, and Amy teaches in Tracy. “Owning a restaurant has been a long time dream of ours,” stated Andy. They are assisted by their daughter, Jessica DeRuyck, a graduate of Southwest Minnesota State University with a degree in business and an insurance agent. Jessica also has ten years of experience serving and bartending and plans to manage the “front of the house” - events, servers and bartenders. Andy will supervise the kitchen staff, place orders and manage inventory while working with distributors. Amy’s skills keep her involved at all levels, filling in the gaps or wherever needed. Slayton native Chantel Scarset is managing the kitchen with cooking skills honed when the restaurant was open before Covid-19 and most recently at Key Largo.

Though the restaurant remained closed during the pandemic, Andy remarked updates were still made and after cleaning the restaurant is in very good condition. “Eventually we want to install new flooring, carpet and a new sign plus we have several outdoor projects this summer.” The fire pit is still a favorite choice on the patio and the campground is available though filling up quickly. The Andersons are making plans for bean bag and volleyball leagues, live music outdoors, disc jockeys indoors, pool and dart leagues and bingo games on Thursdays. Indoor seating can accommodate 200 people and up to 385 people can be outdoors under the canopy. These numbers make City Limits the number one choice for reunions, wedding receptions and graduation parties. Soon, City Limits will be ready to expand their menu as well. Andy said, “We’ll have steaks, pastas, salads and ribs. We want to bring back the salad bar and have daily soup and salad specials. We’re also starting ‘Wing Wednesday’ and Happy Hour is every day between 4-6pm. Currently we have several specialty burgers, wontons, pickle spears, pizza and our reuben sandwich is especially popular.” Amy added, “We have ideas for summer drinks as well, using watermelon and delicious margaritas. We want to bring the patio to life!” In the future, the Andersons plan to expand their hours to include lunch on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, but for now they encourage everyone to come for special holiday buffets which they had on Easter Sunday and will do again for Mother’s Day. Andy said, “We are really excited about the events this summer and thankful for the support of this community.” Jessica remarked, “We have a great staff and they are all working hard but there is room for more.” If you’d like a part-time job or to make a reservation for an event, contact Jessica at the restaurant (507-836-8181) or by email: jessicaderuyck007@gmail.com.
