The University of Minnesota Extension Slayton Winter Crops Day and Small Grains Program will be held in person on Thursday, Feb. 22, at the 4-H building in Slayton. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the program running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Whether you farm or work with farmers, this program is a great opportunity to hear the latest University-based research and information about corn, soybean and small grain production issues and management strategies. The morning program will focus on corn and soybean management topics pertinent to our area. The Southern Small Grains Program will follow in the afternoon, where topics will address successful small grain management.

The regular meeting of the Murray County Board of Commissioners was held on Tuesday, February 06, 2024. Commissioner Jackie Meier was not present for the meeting.

The city council met on Monday, February 5th. Mayor Miron Carney asked for corrections, questions, or additions to the agenda, the regular meeting minutes from January 16th, and the Special Meeting from January 24th (Electric Municipal) meeting on January 24th. There were none. All were approved as printed.

As part of its 50th- anniversary celebration, Plum Creek Library System (PCLS) is thrilled to announce the launch of the “Love My Library campaign, inviting patrons throughout the region to share their heartfelt stories and experiences that make their local libraries special. Library lovers can share their stories from February 1st through February 29th by filling out comment cards at their local library or by submitting stories online at www.plumcreeklibrary.net.

The Murray Masonic Lodge in Slayton is conducting a fund drive to benefit Food Shelves in Slayton and Fulda. Nothing will be subtracted for expenses. Nearly 250 people had the opportunity to listen to three different presentations on Wednesday, Jan. 24 for the second informational meeting regarding the City of Slayton’s electric utility municipalization effort. A question and answer session took place afterward.

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) has announced its Dean’s List for Fall Semester 2023. Students on the Dean’s List have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher while earning a minimum of 12 letter-graded credits.

The Friends of the Casey Jones Trail group is hoping to secure enough support to restore other portions of the trail. They have requested $3.15 million from the State to rehabilitate two segments of the Casey Jones State Trail – the Pipestone trailhead, along with three miles of the trail heading east of the Pipestone and the final segment (3rd phase) of the Currie Loop Trail.

In September 2023, the Murray County Ambulance became the first ambulance agency in Minnesota to implement Avel eCare EMS technology in their rig, utilizing grant funding from Southwest Minnesota EMS.
