During the Fulda School Board Open Forum Nan Henning asked if the board had considered the organization of a committee to advance conversation between Fulda School District and Murray County Central about the future of the two schools. She said that while a lot was learned about the past and present from the joint meeting of the two schools, that nothing was learned about the future of the school districts.
She also asked when the final presentation of the set design of the Fulda building project would be.
Also during Open Forum, second grade teacher Susan Lee stated that she has recently sat through many board meetings where test scores have been discussed. She also noted that she has read comments on social media about test scores. As a teacher, she takes test scores very seriously, as they give direction as to what information her students have learned.
She explained that there are many aspects of a child’s life that need to be taken into account. “The whole child needs to be studied, not just what the child does for the two hours it takes them to finish the test. Teachers know that engaged students learn best.” Lee then stated several ways in which teachers use resources to aid their students in being successful. “We want students to continue to grow and show that they are learning new things. For a student who struggles in either math or reading, this growth should also be celebrated,” Lee stated.
She explained that test scores do not determine a student’s success or a school district’s success. “A teacher’s challenge is to help every student grow in their learning,” Lee said. “Teachers strive for success every day of the school year, not just on MCA testing day.”
