The MCC Rebel Softball team played host to Mountain Lake Area Comfrey on Thursday afternoon. The Rebels were coming off a win over Red Rock Central Westbrook Walnut Grove and were playing a team that beat the Falcons the week before by a similar score. Both teams have shown the ability to hit the ball and score some runs so a close game was expected and that is exactly what happened.

The Wolverines got off to a great start scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning. The Wolverines’ top three hitters got on base without the ball leaving the infield. A short pop fly behind second base was not caught and was followed by a walk. A ground ball off the plate resulted in a run-scoring and an out not being recorded. Annika Brinkman would hit a two-run single to left-centerfield scoring two runs to make the score three to nothing. The Wolverines would score just three more runs over the course of the game with one in the second and two in the fifth. Thea Schneider struck out seven batters in the game and only walked two. She held the Wolverines’ 3rd and 4th hitters without a hit in the game. The MCC Rebels have hit

The MCC Rebels have hit the ball well this season up and down the lineup and off the bench, players have gotten to the plate and put the ball in play. Thursday the Rebels came out quickly scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Atalie Rosenbrook singled and stole second base. Sophie Larson drive her in with a base hit but would be thrown out stealing for the first out of the inning. As it seems always happens after a baserunner is thrown out Thea Schneider singled hard up the middle before Jayda Hellewell walked. Mary Lou McNab would fly out to centerfield for the second out of the inning. Zoey Iverson would pick the Rebels up with a two-run single to leftfield. Morgan Winter would drive in Iverson with a line-drive hit up the middle off the Wolverine pitcher’s glove. The Rebels led 4-3 after one. MCC would add another run in the 4th inning when Karli Heezen would drive in Iverson on an infield ground ball. MCC would trail going to the bottom of the 7th inning by one run. The Rebels have finished games strong all season but MCC had not faced a situation where they were down just one in the bottom half of the 7th. The inning started with a ground out to third base. Then Sophie Larson would single on a ball in front of home plate, which was followed one pitch later by a single by Thea Schneider. Jayda Hellewell attacked the first pitch for the Rebels’ third straight hit which scored the game-tying run and put runners at 2nd and 3rd. MLAC intentionally walked Mary Lou McNab to set up a force out at every base with the game tied at 6 and just one out. Zoey Iverson would step to the plate and on a two-ball pitch would hit a base hit through the left side of the infield to score Schneider and the Rebels would get the win 7-6.

The Rebels are now 3-2 on the season and 2-1 in the Red Rock Conference. Thea Schneider picked up her second win of the week in the circle for the Rebels. Schneider gave up 9 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. The Rebels on offense had 13 hits in the game to score their 7 runs. Sophie Larson, Thea Schneider, and Zoey Iverson had three hits each. Iverson had three big RBIs including the gamewinning hit. The Wolverines and the Rebels played a very close game and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they do it again later this season in Mountain Lake. The Rebels have 3 games on the schedule next week two against Adrian Ellsworth and a non-conference game against Lakeview.
