Thursday night was not a good one for the MCC Rebel Girls Basketball team. The Rebels coming off a strong effort against Canby earlier in the week struggled on the road. The Rebels were in Hills to take on the Patriots of Hills Beaver Creek in the team’s first Red Rock Conference game of the season. The Rebels’ are a defensive-minded team that has struggled on offense this season but the Rebels’ struggles with turnovers on Thursday cost them any chance to compete in the game.
HBC has a new coach this season and a young roster that will need some time to come together. Dylan Gerhke is the new head coach as Kale Wiertsema moved over to the boys’ program. The Patriots return one of the top guards in the conference in Kenadie Fick with four other players with at least some varsity experience. The Patriots are not as talented as they have been in the past but they are a solid team. The Rebels on Thursday would struggle. MCC would turn the ball over 28 times in the first half over 1.5 turnovers per minute. The Rebels would only take 8 shots in the first half from the field which they made 2. MCC did make four free throws but they managed just 9 points. The Rebels defense was still strong which if it wasn’t they would have allowed more than the 22 points they did. The Rebels did force 15 first-half turnovers but it wasn’t nearly enough. Kenadie Fick scored 8 first-half points nearly scoring as many as the Rebels did by herself. The Rebels trailed 22-9 at the half.
The pace of the game slowed in the second half but that didn’t make it any better for the Rebels. MCC still turned the ball over 17 more times in the second half and though the Rebels got off more shots they only made one more than the first half. HBC scored at a higher percentage in the second half with Mackenzie Voss and Kenadie Fick scoring 8 points each. Fick would finish the game with 16 points the Rebels would finish with 16 points. In the end, the turnovers were too much and the Rebels would lose big 56 to 16.
Emily Rohrer scored 6 for the Rebels while Mary Lou McNab added 5. Abby Overman made one 3 point shot while Seanna Swenson scored 2. The Rebels finished with 45 turnovers and just 30 shots from the field. Fick led the Patriots with 16 points while Voss and Layla Deelstra each scored 10. The Rebels will play Mountain Lake Area Comfrey on Tuesday and Heron Lake Okabena Fulda on Friday.
