How do you become a Christian? I have asked multitudes of people that question over the years; both those who go to church and those who do not. It always amazes me when they answer, “Just try to be the best person you can be.” Or, “Get water baptized.” What does Scripture say about this? First of all, trying to be a real good person will never get us into right standing with God for we are all sinners, separated from God and dead in our sins. Read Ephesians 2:1. The Bible tells us that our good works will never save us. Read Ephesians 2:8-10.

REMINDS RESIDENTS TO HELP KEEP FIRE HYDRANTS CLEAR Slayton City Council met on Tuesday, January 3. Council meeting minutes from the December 19 were reviewed and approved.

A new American citizen has arrived in Slayton: Tripod, the three-legged mutt of Anatolian Shepherd heritage has immigrated from Syria! Tripod was rescued by Evan Barney and BethAnn Burch-Winter through the efforts of SPCA International (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and other supporting animal rescue organizations. Evan and BethAnn have adopted and given Tripod the “retirement” he has earned because Evan believes Tripod rescued many soldiers in Syria when days were difficult and emotions were overwhelming.

By Joanne Bergman The Murray County Board of Commissioners met in the final session for 2022 on Tuesday, December 27 with all members present. This was the final meeting for Commissioner Jim Kluis who chose not to run for reelection on the November ballot. Jackie Meier who will be sworn in at the first meeting of January will replace him.

The Murray County Historical Society invites the public to attend its January Dinehart Lunchbox Lecture on Thursday, January 12 in the 4-H building on the Murray County Fairgrounds in Slayton starting at noon. The cost of the talk is $3.00 per person or Historical Society members get in free. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch. Refreshments and light snacks are provided. This month’s lecture will feature Gavin Van Moer who will present: “Immigrant life in the 19th Century.” Van Moer will talk about his two books “1910” and “Homestead.” “1910” is a historical narration that follows the timeline of numerous immigrant families coming to Southwest Minnesota. Along their story lines we see immigrants come through Ellis Island, colonize French Canada, and even some who have to bury their children at sea due to horrendous travel conditions. “Homestead” is a historical narration that follows the life of William Trulock who was a 19th century English immigrant coming to America following the Civil War. Follow along his journey as he departs from England as a poor farm laborer to explore and discover the western border of the American Midwest. Gavin Van Moer is a small-town author from Tracy, MN. A 2017 graduate from South Dakota State University, Gavin graduated with a Bachelor of Science in History specializing in teaching. Although he is a full-time hog farmer, he has a passion for history and a determination to present historical stories.

All boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2023 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held on Sunday, January 8, 2023 at the Murray County Central High School Competition Gym in Slayton. Registration starts at 12:30. Boys and girls will start shooting at 1:00 p.m. There is no fee to participate.
