The first day of the candidate filing period for all federal, state and county offices was a busy one in Murray County. As of May 19, two people had filed for County Commissioner District 3 - Tyson VanPeursum and incumbent Dennis Welgraven. For County Commissioner District 4, Judy Onken Laboda has filed. Also filing as incumbents for their current county office are Auditor/Treasurer Heidi Winter, Recorder Karen Brown, Sheriff Heath Landsman and Attorney Travis J Smith.

Local organizations across the area are receiving support through Operation Round Up, a program made possible by members of Nobles Cooperative Electric who choose to round up their electric bills each month. These small contributions—often just a few cents—are pooled together and returned to the community through local grants.

Sharon Giese was approved on Tuesday as the new Murray County Coordinator in a 4-1 vote. Giese was hired as the Human Resources Director and Deputy Administrator last year. Within months of Giese’s arrival, Administrator Carolyn McDonald agreed to resign from the position after being put under investigation for her conduct. That resignation agreement came with the stipulation from McDonald that that the investigation against her be dropped.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 64 of Slayton will be distributing poppies on Thursday, May 21. The money collected will be used to suport programs for Veterans. When you see members of the Auxiliary with the poppies, remember what our Veterans have done to keep our nation free. Many gave the ultimate sacrifice and so many are still struggling today. Please be generous and give from the heart. Thank you for your generosity and for honoring our Veterans.

Fulda School District art teacher, Judy Busman, has announced her retirement, effective at the end of the 2025-2026 school year. She has taught for 29 years in the Fulda District, but her teaching career spans 40 years.

Here is the game recap: HADLEY 15 FOX LAKE 1 – 7 innings A good-sized crowd was in attendance for the Buttermaker home opener on a gorgeous Mother’s Day afternoon.

George Rosenbrook went 4-for-4, and teammates Garrett Johnson and Van Prahm hit back-to-back home runs as the Murray County Central baseball team defeated Tracy 14-6 in the championship game of the Hadley Lions Junior High tournament last weekend.

The Murray County Central golf teams wrapped up the Red Rock Conference season with strong performances and several individual honors during the final conference meet at Worthington Country Club. Players were greeted with sunny skies but brutal winds throughout the day. While the course was in excellent condi-tion, the Rebels battled difficult putting surfaces and challenging shots around the trees during the final conference competition.

May 7 MCC at Pipestone The MCC Rebel Baseball team continued their terrific season on Thursday when they played the Pipestone Arrows in a non-conference matchup. The Rebels travelled to play the Arrows in hopes of adding to this season’s win total.
