AREA YOUTH LEARN ABOUT FORENSICS, AI, WITH MURRAY COUNTY 4-H SUMMER PROGRAMS

Last week was a busy week for Murray County 4-H. The program hosted two summer programs on Monday and Tuesday. The first class, Understanding AI, was held Monday afternoon, June 16, at the Murray County 4-H Building. Emergency Management Safety Director Carl Nyquist provided the materials for the class. The sixteen youth who participated learned the basics of generative AI, as well as the positives and negatives of this new technology. Participants got to expand their technological knowledge by getting to test and compare different AI databases. Youth in grades 3-7 participated in the class.

SLAYTON CITY COUNCIL LOOKS AT 2026 SCDP ROUND

The Slayton City Council approved moving forward with an application for the 2026 round of Small Cities Development Program (SCDP) during their June 16 meeting. Jessica Foley, Director of Community Development for DSI, was present to update the council on the current SCDP, which funded rehabilitation on 19 owner-occupied homes, four single-family rentals and three commercial buildings in Slayton.

BUSY AND VARIED AGENDA HANDLED BY COMMISSIONERS

By Joanne Bergman The Murray County Board of Commissioners met on June 17, 2025. Ducks Unlimited and MN DNR discussed the acquisition of land included in Judicial Ditch 27 that spans both Murray and Lyon Counties. The ditch will be partially abandoned with changes planned in 2026 that will restore 36 wetland areas. Private tile owners were assured that they will have access to the area for repair of their tile lines.

Piecemakers Quilt Club will meet on Tuesday, June 24, at 1:30 p.m. in the community room of the Slayton Public Library. The lesson/ presentation will be on the different ways to applique. Everyone is welcome.

COW EFFICIENCY: MORE POUNDS, LESS FEED — MORE PROFIT

With high feed costs, improving whole-farm feed efficiency for both beef and dairy operations is crucial to maximizing herd profitability. All beef and dairy producers, individuals selling feed to these operations, and industry professionals are invited to join the Minnesota Dairy Initiative and UMN Extension on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at the Murray County 4-H Building for a free educational event focused on cow efficiency and forage production.
