The Fulda Murray County Central Warriors made the trip to Redwood Falls, MN for the Redwood River Riot on Friday night leading into Saturday for a very big 32 team tournament. Christian Kuball for the second week in a row made another impressive showing placing 8th in another tournament where the Warriors haven had a placing since Jon Gehl won 8th place in 2016. The junior varsity team really made some racket over the two day tournament filing 70 matches to the varsity’s 14. Each JV wrestler would expect at least 6 matches in the two days and they all showed true competition and hard work in their matches.
Friday night the Redwood Valley hosted a team dual tournament where the FMCC Warriors JV Team won 2 of 3 duals and hypothetically would have won three had all the wrestlers been available. Top to bottom the JV Wrestling team will be a force in the next few years as this young wrestling team develops. Watching these matches shows that these wrestlers like to win and put the work in to be better everyday. Nick Henning the Head Coach for the Warriors stated that these wrestlers come to practice to grind and learn everyday.
For the Varsity side of the FMCC Warriors Denver Ash led the tournament with a tough loss late in the 2nd period against Caleb Langager of Blue Earth. Ash was able to fend off the onslaught of Langager in the 1st period with a solid whizzer and kept from being turned. The 2nd period didn’t go as well as Langager put Ash to his back twice for the eventual fall.
Denver in his 2nd match went the distance with Josh Sotelo of Sibley East where he fought off an early takedown by Sotelo. The second period was tied with Ash earning two escapes against Sotelo’s takedown. The 3rd period Denver found his groove earning a takedown and getting the score close but couldn’t finish with a win.(8-4)
Aiden Lorenzen at 138lbs. also went 2 and out losing to Nakiye Mercado of St. Peter on Friday night who would wrestle back to take 8th place. On Saturday morning Aiden wrestled Ethan Elvebak and put up a great fight but just couldn’t get things to fall his way. Aiden is a fun wrestler to watch as he has a lot of heart and enjoys the sport there is a lot of season and a couple of years left yet for him.
Christian Kuball at 182lbs couldn’t find his winning groove as well wrestling 5 very close matches ending up with 8th place. Kuball is always a tough competitor and only took one loss by fall to Cole Ackerman of Sauk Rapids-Rice who would eventually place 5th.
Ryder Henning at 220lbs. in the first round had Cam Wieneke of Adrian and got the 1st takedown and dominated the period but couldn’t score any points on Cam. Late in the second period Ryder looking as though he had the match Cam ran with the granby roll and caught Ryder in a pin. Ryder’s second match against Wyatt Irlbeck went Ryders way as he got a reversal and spread him out in a honeymooner for the pin. Ryders 3rd match against Joshua Allen didn’t go so good as Allen charged in and caught Ryder in a half nelson and held him for the pin. Allen would go on to win 8th place in the tournament.
Rylan Klein at 285lbs. is really gaining some momentum. Going almost 6 minutes against Tucker Mugg is a impressive feat. In the match against Mugg Rylan was able to climb out from underneath to score the escape. Kleins 2nd match against Gavin Noyes was much the same at Rylan is a tough competitor and wrestles every second and doesn’t give up.
