    QUINTIN LEWIS & LUCAS KUBALL

It was a bittersweet week for the Fulda/MCC Warriors as they took two team losses at a Triangular meet in Windom, MN losing to Windom and UNITED, but had two place winners at the 9th grade state individual tournament in Champlin MN.

The Warriors went to take on the Lac Qui Parle, Dawson/ Boyd, Montevideo UNITED wrestling in the first dual of the evening and Kaston Clarke was first up to take on Eli Olson where he just couldn’t get his offense going. Even though he captured Olson in a headlock late in the match, the unpinable Clarke lost by technical fall in the third period. Brayden Gilb at 114, took a fall 41 seconds into the first period. Teague Meyer fell with 38 seconds left in the second period. Torrin Clarke fell with 10 seconds left in the first period. Denver Ash, scoring the initial takedown on a single leg, losing 9-3 in the 3rd period, fell to a pin with 6 seconds left in the match.

Lucas Kuball at 138, took 6 points from UNITED against Adrian Norman, scoring on a low single, catching the ankle of Norman, hanging on and getting behind for the two in the first period. Allowing Norman to escape, Kuball entered the 2nd period with a 1 point lead. Starting on top in the referees position, Kuball captured an armbar and then threaded the needle for the pin.

Following a pin by Zander Clausen against our Aiden Lorenzen, the unpinnable Owen Olsom went the distance with Ethan Moravetz holding Moravetz to a decision after three periods of hard riding. Olsom never gave up, fighting hard all the way to the end.

After Luke Iverson fell to Holt Larson in 47 seconds, and Carson Lewis fell to Noah Meyer in 1:30, Carson Klein drew Mason Peterson and came out firing on all cylinders, taking Peterson to the mat, snapping his head, catching a front headlock and working for a turn with a butcher, eventually got behind Peterson for the score. Peterson scored with an escape of his own and took Klein down, but Klein, sitting out, caught the inside of Peterson’s leg and came out from behind and got on top for a reversal, going into the 2nd period 4-3. The second and third period went to Peterson as he got on top and kept Klein on the defense for two periods. Klein gave his all, but fell to a pin with 1 second left on the clock.

With an open weight at 195 Colby Kesteloot came out to wrestle at 220 against Landon Olson and spent 2 periods underneath, keeping good position, waiting for his opportunity. Scoring 2 points on escapes in the 2nd period Kesteloot, going into the 3rd period with a 6-2 deficit was feeling the strain of fighting on the bottom and gave up an escape. Starting on top in the referees position, he eventually gave up the pin 48 seconds into the 3rd period.

Rylan Klein couldn’t get his offense going either, but made it to the third period before giving up the fall making the final score 6-74 in favor of UNITED. Next up were the Windom/ Mountain Lake Cobras and Kaston Clarke, always confident, came to the mat to take on Preston Xayachak, a very good wrestler for the Cobras. Clarke just couldn’t get his offense going, taking a fall after 49 seconds. Brayden Gilb, at 113, down 15-2 in the 2nd period, scored on Matthew Voehl, getting his hips out for reversal and a nearfall for 4 points and remained unscathed in the 2nd period, making the final score only a major decision.

In the 120# bout, Teague Meyer drew Kameron Koerner and went to work with two double leg takedowns and a low single in the first period, allowing two escapes for Koerner. Meyer started on bottom in the second period and earned his escape after a stalling warning to Koerner. The wrestlers would hand fight for position for the remainder of the period. The third period had Meyer keeping the pressure on with a single leg takedown after an escape by Koerner from bottom referees position. Koerner would earn 1 more escape before the end of the match, but Meyer’s takedown points would prevail, with a final score of 9-4 earning a 3 point decision for the Warriors.

After Torrin Clarke fell to Aiden Holmberg in the second period, Denver Ash took on Jared Hunter and boy did they put on a show. Ash is a speedy wrestler with a lot of go power and got in on an outside single right away. Unable to turn Hunter, Ash allowed him up, and with both wrestlers back on their feet, Ash scored on another textbook single leg. Hunter, starting on bottom in the second period was allowed up and with both wrestlers on their feet again, Ash went to work on another single, this time catching the half on the way to the mat scoring two nearfall points. Hunter, a very good scrambler, was able to get out of his predicament with a reversal, scoring two back. Ash still wasn’t done scoring as, he too, good on the scramble, got his own reversal, going into the third period 10-5 Ash. The third period saw some real fireworks starting in neutral position, with Ash scoring again with a nice single, but the slippery Hunter countered with a reversal and a 3pt nearfall of which Ash would escape making the score 1412. Hunter had more gas in the tank as he went in on a single and caught Ash in a tight reverse head lock and held him to the mat for the comeback pin. All in all an excellent match.

Lucas Kuball, at 138, had Tucker Renquist of the Cobras and went to scoring his 1st two points of the match out of a scramble, then riding Renquist for the remainder of the period, unable to get a turn, but not allowing an escape. The second period was all Kuball, starting in neutral position, scoring with a well executed ankle pick. With the coaches calling for the cut, knowing Kuball had the better take down, Kuball allowed an escape only to catch another ankle pick. The third period, Kuball chose neutral position and with a head in the hole out of the scramble, skunked the half, pinned Renquist to the mat and waited for the pin.

At 145, Aiden Lorenzen took on Noah Holmberg. Holmberg, looking for the underhooks, had Lorenzen busy avoiding a throw, until he scored in the last second with a solid double leg. Starting on top in the second period with a 2-0 lead, Holmberg sat out for an escape. Lorenzen was quick to his high crotch, switching to a double and scoring the takedown. After a cut, called for by the coaching staff, Lorenzen scored again, but this time out of a scramble. Lorenzen, starting on bottom in the third period, was quick to his feet to score the escape, but this time a desperate Holmberg found his own takedown, scoring on Lorenzen. Going off the mat, Holmberg chose neutral position, giving up another point and Lorenzen took him right to the mat with a blast double, and this time put on a solid pinning combination and got the fall for the Warriors.

With a team score of 22-15 Quintin Lewis came to the mat at 152 against Eagan Maras. Maras scored the initial takedown on Lewis. Lewis, ever patient, waited for an opening and started his own offense sitting out. Then, turning in on Maras, gaining control and getting behind, Lewis put on a reverse half, scoring the pin and bringing the Warriors within 1 point.

After Owen Olsem fell to Montgomery Bjorklund, Luke Iverson took the stage against John Bergman, scoring on a hard crossface counter to Bjorklund’s shot. Iverson got the knuckle roll half and wasted no time pinning Bergman to the mat, bringing the Warriors again within 1 point.

Carson Klein at 182 had Graycen Hanson and with a single leg takedown covered Hansen up on the edge of the mat and rode out the remaining seconds of the period looking for a turn. Klein, choosing bottom for the second period, didn’t allow Hanson to score as he picked Hanson’s hands, getting away for the escape. Another takedown came by way of another good single. With a Witzel, Klein stacked Hanson up for a 3 point nearfall bringing the period to an end. Hanson chose neutral for the third period and couldn’t get his offense going as Klein got in on another single, this time catching a nearside cradle for the pin putting the Warriors on top 2833. After 2 double forfeits and a forfeit to Rylan Klein, the Warriors took the dual 28-39.

On Saturday, five of the Fulda/MCC Warrior wrestlers travelled to Champlin Park where, after a lot of wrestling, two of the Warriors found their way to the podium. Quintin Lewis finished the day with 4 place in the state of 9th grade and under, with an outstanding match, just missing third place. Lucas Kuball, with a cradle, made 7th place.

Tuesday, February 7th the Warriors look to travel to Granite Falls for a quadrangular against Pipestone, Minneota, and Quad County. Then on Friday, February 10th in Fulda, the Warriors host a quad against Luverne, Ortonville, and St. James.

GOOD LUCK WARRIORS!
