The MCC Rebel volleyball team continued on a winning path in Comfrey against the Mt. Lake Area/Comfrey Wolverines. MCC swept MLA/C in three games.
The Rebels started out decisively behind Casey Miller’s two ace serves to start the set, holding steady to a nice lead before Alexis Romsdahl took the Wolverines on a little run eventually tying the set at 9 points.
MLA/C wasn’t going to give up easily as the Rebels were caught off guard by a tricky setter dump from the Wolves. Kate Slettum answered back with two kills off Miller sets to keep it interesting. The Wolverines found the line for a couple kills, prompting MCC to take a time out at 13-15, MLA/C lead.
Blocking ignited the Rebels as the rotation brought Atalie Rosenbrook and Abby Loosbrock to the front row. The duo combined for five kills and two ace blocks in the first set to secure the win, 25-21.
Mt. Lake served first in game two, but MCC got their errors out of the way early. Rosenbrook proved too much to handle for the home team staying solid at the net both defensively and offensively.
The Rebels kept a comfortable three to four-point lead behind libero Jaelen Barstad while Rebel setters Miller and Slettum dished out hit after hit.
It seemed as though MCC was going to sail into a set two victory until the Wolverines took advantage of Rebel errors. They battled from a six point deficit when MCC stalled at point 23.
A kill by Loosbrock took the Rebels to 24-20, but MLA/C wasn’t done yet, hitting errors gave them the momentum. Unable to turn it around on their own, MCC called time out at 24-22; just too many errors for the Rebel coaches.
A hitting error by Loosbrock allowed the game to come within one point, but Slettum was willing to give her one more chance. Barstad received serve perfectly and this time Loosbrock put the ball away to end game two, 25-23.
The Rebels were slow to start in game three, falling behind 0-4. Slettum served two aces to bring the team back. MCC managed to stay ahead through the middle of the set due to aggressive serving and tough net play.
MLA/C tied the game at 20 reminding the visitors they were still there as the two teams traded points to the end. The Rebels were victorious seeing Miller set her counterpart for a well-timed tip and a finishing attack by Slettum, 25-23.
The Rebel team combined for 38 digs, seven blocks, 32 set assists, 33 kills and 12 service aces. Rebel JV lost in three contentious sets, 29-31, 20-25, and 15-17; while the C team won two out of three, 25-23, 25-19 and 13-15.
