For the past several years, Trinity Lutheran Church congregation members admired the Nativity Scene that neighbor Todd Hieronimus set up in front of Totzke Funeral Home on Broadway Avenue in Slayton each Christmas season. The figurines of Baby Jesus, Mother Mary, Joseph, God’s Angel, Shepherds, Wise Men, and barn animals comprised the classiest Nativity Scene many of the congregation members had ever seen and this compliment was passed along to Todd.

In Spring 2022, Todd came in possession of a second matching set and sold it to the church. Trinity’s long-time set had been a witness of faith to the community for several decades, but was badly in need of upgrading. Pastor Jeff Williams and the Church Council approved the purchase, and Church congregation members made freewill donations to cover the cost. In Summer and Fall 2022, steps were taken to finalize the way in which the church’s new Nativity Scene was to be displayed. The chosen site was the church’s open lot to the north along Highway 30. A new hayrack – one on which Denny and Julie Beers haul a water tank to water trees at the family acreage with in the summertime – was placed at an angle so commuters traveling Highway 30 from the west could get a long look at it.

Rick “Dirty” Manderscheid of Manderscheid Construction built and donated a Nativity Scene barn that was placed atop the hayrack. Rick used rustic-looking lumber stripped from a customer’s old deck to build the barn. Keith, Chelsey, Rhett, and Remi Carlson donated straw bales from their Chandler-area farm to insulate the barn. Doug Brinks and Michael Keleher of Slayton Electric were hired to run power from the church’s boulevard sign to light up spotlights for the display. Trinity’s preschool Sunday School class students and their parents situated the figurines within the barn for display.

For years to come, Trinity Lutheran Church wishes to share the story of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with the Slayton community and passersby through display of this new Nativity Scene during the Christmas season.
