By Blythe Zeug, MCMC RN Summer in Murray County brings no shortage of fun— from boating at Lake Shetek, to long days at the fairgrounds, to Fourth of July fireworks celebrations. As an Emergency Room nurse, all of these seasonal favorites have one thing in common: they can also lead to unexpected trips to the ER.
The good news is that a few simple precautions can help keep you and your family safe, healthy, and enjoying everything summer has to offer.
Water Safety
Whether you’re spending the day at the lake or pool, water safety should always come first:
• Wear properly fitted life jackets when boating or participating in water activities
• Designate a dedicated adult “water watcher” who is free from distractions like phones or books
• Never swim alone
• Be aware of underwater hazards such as rocks, dropoffs, or debris
• Avoid alcohol while swimming or boating Heat-Related Illnesses Summer heat can quickly become dangerous, especially for vulnerable groups.
• Young children and older adults are at the highest risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke
• People who work or exercise outdoors are more likely to develop heat-related illnesses
• Dehydration significantly increases your risk, and alcohol can make dehydration worse Know the signs of heat exhaustion:
High body temperature, pale or clammy skin, headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, or vomiting.
If you or a loved one develops these symptoms:
• Move to a cooler place immediately • Drink water
• Use cool towels, ice packs, or take a cool bath to lower body temperature If symptoms persist or worsen, seek emergency medical care right away.
Firework Safety
Fireworks are a holiday tradition, but they can also cause serious injuries if not handled carefully.
• Always use fireworks in clear, open spaces
• Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby for emergencies
• Never throw or point fireworks at people, animals, or vehicles
• Never place any part of your body directly over a firework while lighting the fuse
• Light one firework at a time and maintain a safe distance Enjoy Summer Safely
With a little preparation and awareness, you can make the most of summer while avoiding preventable injuries.
We hope these safety tips help keep you and your family out of the emergency room this season. But if you do need medical care, ER providers and nurses are available 24/7 to provide you with exceptional care.
Stay safe, Murray County, and have a healthy summer!
