Slayton Kiwanis Club was chartered in 1951 by a group of Slayton men noticing the need to help the children and youth of this community. This was the start of a tradition that continues today, seventy years later. In the 1980’s women were invited to join. They currently meet the first and third Wednesday of every month at 12 noon at the Plaid Moose. New members are welcome.
The purpose of the local Kiwanis club is to provide local children with enriched opportunities to excel in academics, extra curriculars, leadership and community involvement. This past year, in spite of the pandemic, over $8,000 was given to individuals or organization with in the community to benefit children. Some of those receiving funding are MCC scholarships, Cub Scouts, Early Childhood Initiative, WonderWorld, Murray County Christmas Project, American Legion Boys and Girls State, youth soccer and many more.
On Sunday, November 14, Kiwanis will hold their annual Pancake Breakfast at St. Ann’s Hall. (Not so annual in 2020!) This is one way funds are raised to support their commitment to the children. Mark your calendar and plan to attend this worthwhile event.
