The Slayton City Council met on Wednesday, July 7th for their first meeting of the month. Present were Mayor Miron Carney, Councilmembers Kate Harmsen, Blake Heronimus, and Dean Ackerman, along with City Administrator Josh Malchow, Kari Carlson and Merlyn Anderson. Absent was Chris Jacobson.
The Council approved the agenda for the week and reviewed and approved the meeting minutes from the June 21st and 28th meetings. The claims for the month were reviewed. They discussed that the pool heater project still has some water leak issues and will withhold 25% of that payment until those have been fixed. Councilmember Heronimus abstained from this vote.
Malchow gave the Council an update on the Golden Living Center location. The demo has been complete. There was some soil contamination discovered near where the old fuel tank was. This has been passed on to the PCA and is being dealt with. They are currently waiting to hear back on that before moving forward.
Brad Pagel, with the Slayton American Legion, asked the Council to consider a proclamation declaring August 21st as “Slayton American Legion Erwin March Post 64 Day”. Their post namesake, Erwin March, is the first known Slayton, Murray County and Minnesota resident to be killed in action in World War 1. The post is celebrating their centennial during this year’s Murray County Fair due to COVID canceling events last year.
The next item of business was the topic of gun replacement for Jeremy Steinle. Tom Whitehead would like to purchase his old gun (Glock 43X 9mm) and the practice of the City has been to allow that in the past. Brandon Lolkus of Redleg Company Inc will purchase the gun from the City of Slayton and handle the appropriate paperwork. The Council next approved the liquor license for the Murray County Fair Board for this year’s fair, August 18th to 21st.
The last item of new business was to approve the hiring of Derek Kluis as a sub for the Parks & Rec department. There will be some scheduling conflicts in the coming weeks which will result in not enough staff. It was decided to hire Kluis to fill in those gaps. This was approved.
With no other business, the meeting was adjourned. The next City Council meeting will be July 19th at 7pm.
