Considerable repairs to the Slayton Fire Department pumper truck were approved by Slayton City Council at Monday night’s meeting. Emergency Apparatus Maintenance, Inc. had prepared a quote for $12,090.76, with that quote listing everything on the pumper truck that is in need of repair.
Two 6000psi tanks will be added to the fire department’s Cascade System for a total of $5,600. In larger incidents, the firefighters are running out of stored air due to the members using packs more frequently. Switching tanks more frequently keeps the firefighters safe and free from the toxins that are burning in the fires. The fire department submitted for an Operation Roundup Grant through Nobles Coop Electric and received $2,100. Those funds will be used, as well as donation funds, towards the tank purchase.
A decision regarding township contracts with the fire department was tabled until more information could be gathered.
Two task orders from Bollig Engineering were approved for hangar improvements and construction of an ag spray pad at the Slayton Airport.
Council members discussed a proposed bid for treatment and/or removal of ash trees at Bicentennial Park. It was evident from photos provided that some of the trees are diseased and need to be treated or removed. A concern raised by the council was replacement of the trees to continue to provide shade in the park. City Administrator, Josh Malchow, assured the council that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has a compiled listing of trees that can be used to replace the diseased trees.
Slayton City Council will meet in regular session on Monday, July 6, 2026.
