Slayton City Council met on Monday, March 7th. The agenda, meeting minutes and claims were approved.
For pending information, City Administrator Josh Malchow updated on the Xcel data request. The first data request with Xcel was filed awhile ago and it was noticed that we were not getting the appropriate information for the town of Slayton and have now requested again for Slayton specifically.
Unfinished business included an update on the Rupp Appeal which is scheduled for March 21st. Malchow has spoken with Rupp and Malchow is inquiring if the Council had any specific questions that he should pass along to Doug Rupp. The request includes slightly smaller setbacks. Rylan Rupp was present and informed the Council that what he’s been told it will be a repair bay for cars and trucks but doesn’t have any specifics.
The next item was the CDBG Broadband Grant update. The total funds are $2.6 million with a match of $581,000 from the provider that is chosen for the project. The Council approved the contract and will move along to the next steps in the process.
Moving on to new business the first item was a quote for the new pool slide. The cost will be $34,000 for a Starfish Slide and pad. Malchow stated the pad may not be required but won’t know until the project is started. There are funds in the Capital Improvement Budget for this purchase. The Council approved this purchase. They also approved the purchase for a new VFD on one of the pumps for the pool. The cost is $5,020 and these funds are in the Capital Improvement Budget.
They next discussed the custodial contracts for the cleaning of the City buildings. The recommendation is to see if there are other less expensive options for this service and to go out for proposals for this for the 2023 year. They also discussed the food trucks in the city of Slayton and the cost for this. Last year they only charged the peddler fee of $60, which the ordinance states the peddler fee is only good for 2 weeks. However, it was decided to consider a food truck license. This has come to light as some of the brick and motor businesses feel as taxpayers, they are losing business. The Council agreed this is something they should look into doing a license for and Malchow will get some information from area communities to see how they handle it and bring that back to the Council.
They next approved the gambling application for Currie Town and Country at City Limits in Slayton. This was approved. They also approved the 2022 Liquor Licenses for renewal. These are all pending proper payment and paperwork on file with the City. The businesses included are: City Limits, The Grain Exchange, Golf on Broadway, Slayton Country Club, Murray County Racing Association, Slayton Liquor, Alley Cat Lanes, Slayton Liquor & Tobacco, and Beaver Creek Archery Club.
The Council next went into closed section for the performance evaluation of the City Deputy Clerk, Kari Carlson. The next City Council meeting will be March 21st at 7pm.
