Sherri Burke is new to the Fulda School District as the district-wide speech-language pathologist. “I will be assessing and providing speech-language services for qualifying students birth-21,” Burke stated.
She is a 1981 graduate of Spirit Lake HIgh School, Spirit Lake, IA.
Burke attended Iowa State University and received her Bachelor of Science in speech communications. She then attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she gained a degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
“After receiving my degree, my husband, Tom, and I moved to Newton, Iowa, where I served several schools through the Area Education Agency,” Burke said. “I also worked with adults in the hospital setting. We moved to Minnesota in 1997 and I have worked in both hospitals and area schools since that time.”
When asked why she chose the career path she did, Burke replied, “I have always had an interest in how people speak, even when I was in elementary school. When I was elementary age, speech was not a mandated service in the schools and I saw how kids with communication problems were often bullied or teased by peers. It helped me decide I wanted to be someone who could help others in this area.”
Burke said, “I am looking forward to working within a smaller district where I have the opportunity to get to know student families better, and work in partnership with them to meet their children’s speechlanguage goals. Students need caring, invested adults who can help them reach their full potential in order to be successful.”
“I am looking forward to working with the Fulda staff, students, and families,” Burke said. “It will be nice to work in the community where I live versus spending time on the road driving to other districts.”
