The MCC Rebel Girls Basketball team was looking to add to its win total this past Thursday night when the Rebels hosted the Red Rock Central Falcons. The Falcons, like the Rebels, have struggled to pick up wins this season with RRC having just 1 win on the year entering the game. The Falcons have had a long winning streak against the Rebels which dates back into the past decade, so, for the Rebels, a win would push them past last year’s win total and would end a long losing streak to the Falcons.
The first half brought together a lot of the negatives for the Rebels over the past two weeks, combined with some of the good from earlier in the year. The negatives were the turnovers. MCC turned the ball over 17 times in the first half almost one per minute. On the good side, the Rebels forced 15 turnovers. The Rebels did not shoot well from the floor in this game, other than Seanna Swenson, something else that has plagued the Rebels over the course of the year. The good news, is the Rebels didn’t allow the Falcons to make many of their shots as RRC only made 6 shots from the field in the first half. The Rebels’ defense and the 14 points scored by Seanna Swenson put the Rebels ahead 25 to 20 at the half.
In the second half, things changed, and not for the betterment of the Rebels. MCC’s turnovers continued on the same pace as the first half with 17. The problem was, MCC’s defense only forced 4 secondhalf turnovers unlike the 15 they forced in the first half. The Falcons pounded the ball into the low post area where 6’0” Senior Sondra Rindfleisch resides. The Falcon senior center scored 15 second-half points as she played the entire second half while only picking up one foul. She would make 5 of her final six free throws as RRC came from behind to take the lead and then win the game. Seanna Swenson was solid in the second half scoring 8 points and Zoey Iverson added 5 more points but the rest of the Rebels scored 4. It was a painful way to finish the game, as MCC had so many things going their way at halftime. Red Rock Central would get the win 47 t0 42.
The Rebels were led by Seanna Swenson who scored 22 points and grabbed 9 rebounds but the next highest scorer was Zoey Iverson who had just 7. No other Rebel had more than 3 points. The Falcons were led by Sondra Rindfleisch who scored 22 points but she got a little more help with 10 points from Alyssa Cowan and 6 points from Emily DeCock. The Rebels wouldn’t have time to dwell on this game, as the team would play at Edgerton on Saturday.
