The MCC Rebel Softball team opened the week on the road in Sanborn looking to pick up their first conference win of the season. The Rebels took on Red Rock Central Westbrook Walnut Grove in a battle of two of the youngest teams in the conference. The Rebels who have struggled early in games got the bats working early on their way to an impressive offensive game and victory.
Murray County Central set the tone for this game in the first inning. Atalie Rosenbrook and Sophie Larson drew walks and Thea Scheider hit a three-run home run to center field to put the Rebels ahead. Mary Lou McNab would double and Zoey Iverson singled and would later steal second base with two outs. Karlie Heezen would single to right field to drive in both runners and MCC led 5-0 after a half-inning. MCC would score four more runs in the second inning as Larson would single, Schneider would walk, Jayda Hellewell would single to drive in Larson. Mary Lou McNab would hammer a high drive that would clear the left-field fence for the Rebels’ second home run of the game and the Rebels put up 9 runs in the first two innings. MCC’s bats didn’t slow down as the Rebels added 2 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings. MCC added a single run in the 5th and 3 more in the 6th. MCC would add another run in the 7th for an 18-run game.
Red Rock Central Westbrook Walnut Grove would keep up with the Rebels scoring four runs on four hits in the first inning. Nora Hemmingson had a big hit with a 2 run double. Thea Schneider would strike out two batters in the second innings as RRC/WWG failed to score a run in the second. The Charging Falcons would plate two runs in each of the 3rd and 4th innings with Mercedes Myers connecting on a two-run home run. Thea Schneider did a nice job over the final three innings of only allowing one run on one hit. As she got in her groove the Rebels’ offense was helping the team pull away. MCC would pick up the win 18-9.
The Rebels were led at the plate by Sophie Larson who went 4/5 with a double, 2 RBIs, and 3 runs scored. Mary Lou McNab went 3/4 at the plate with a home run, 2 doubles, and 4 RBIs. Thea Schneider was 2/3 with a home run and 5 RBIs. Schneider picked up the win on the mound striking out 7 while walking 2 in 7 innings. The Rebels play Thursday at home against Mountain Lake Area.
