The MCC Rebels were back in action this past Thursday when they played the Mountain Lake Area Comfrey Wolverines. The Rebels beat the Wolverines earlier this season in Mountain Lake, where the Rebels had not had success in years. The Rebels have been playing really well, with 6 straight wins entering the game on Thursday. They were looking to keep their dreams of a conference championship alive. They would get a little closer on Thursday.

The first game this season between the two teams was a hard-fought battle that would go back and forth. On Thursday, that wasn’t the case, as the Rebel’s defense came to play. The Rebels shut down the Wolverines by changing matchups throughout the first half, while not allowing MLAC to get open outside jump shots. The Wolverines scored 20 points in the first half, but it didn’t come easy. The Rebels went to Bryce Hoekman early and often and the 6’8” junior scored over the shorter Wolverines at will. The MCC big man scored 16 firsthalf points, more than half of his team’s points, in the first 18 minutes. The Rebels led at the break.

The second half was a onesided contest. The Rebels held the Wolverines to just 15 points. MCC, on offense, had a balanced attack, with 4 players scoring 4 points or more in the second half. The Rebels started to connect from the threepoint line, which helped the Rebels blow open the lead. The team made 5 three-pointers in the second half as they pulled away. The Rebel defense didn’t allow a single made three-point shot in the second half. The Rebels cruised to a surprising 67 to 35 win.

The Rebels shot 47% from the field in the game, which is great, but they also held the Wolverines to 23%. What really hurt MLAC was that they made 1 three-point shot in 23 attempts, good for 4%. Bryce Hoekman led the Rebels with 23 points, 7 blocks, and 6 rebounds. Tanner Graphenteen scored 11 points while making 3 second-half three-pointers. The Wolverines were led by Carter Olson who finished the game with 12 points. The Rebels would take the momentum from this win and carry it over one day by playing TMB on Friday.
