The Safe and Supportive Schools Act is a law that has been put in place to protect students in the school environment. The act defines bullying as student to student behavior that is intimidating, threatening, abusive or harming. This type of behavior is considered bullying when it creates an imbalance of power between the bully and the victim and the conduct is repeated or forms a pattern. Conduct that substantially interferes with a student’s educational opportunities or performance or ability to participate in school activities also fits the definition of bullying. Bullying that occurs through electronic means (social media, texting, etc.) is also prohibited under this law. Bullying through electronic communication can fall under this act even if it occurs off school property if it interferes with a student’s ability to learn.
We are working hard at MCC Elementary to address bullying concerns between students. We have recently done bullying surveys at some grade levels to help identify specific issues so that we can put efforts in place to support the students who are most in need. We understand that students are sometimes hesitant to report bullying behaviors due to fear of retaliation. Please encourage your child to reach out to staff if they have a concern. We are unable to help if we are unaware that there is a problem. We also investigate all reports in a way that will best keep the identity of the person who has reported confidential.
You can help us to promote a positive school culture by teaching your children how to appropriately handle conflicts and emotions. Parents are children’s first and best teachers! Encourage them to seek help if conflicts get too big for them to handle themselves.
Our elementary students will get to enjoy a presentation entitled “Bulldoze the Bully” by Brian Richards with 4 Ace Productions on March 23. This will be an entertaining program with magic and a positive message. We appreciate your help as we continue to promote the 3 R’s – Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Ready to Learn at MCC Elementary!
