The Murray County Central Rebels opened week number two of the season at home Monday night against the Canby Lancers. The Lancers are expected to be one of the top teams in the Camden Conference this season led by their experienced roster filled with length four of the five starters are 5’8” or taller. The Rebels would see a more experienced version of themselves on Monday night and they would give everything they had in a tough defensive-minded game unfortunately the Rebels would come up short.
The first half of this game was not the prettiest basketball you will see. The defenses led the way for both teams but there was plenty of poor offense mixed in. The two teams combined to make just 12 shots in 18 minutes. The Rebels would make 7 free throws but both teams failed to score 20 points in the half. Canby’s Aidyn Bruns scored 6 points and Ryann Hansen scored 5 for the Lancers. MCC was led by Emily Rohrer who scored 7 points and Mary Lou McNab added 4 points. Neither team shot well and the Rebels turned the ball over 13 times by the Lancers were not that much better giving it away 11 times. Canby led at the half 18-17 in a very even but the ugly first half of basketball.
The Rebels would stay in the game in the second half but Kortney Leppke and Aidyn Bruns would take the game over. Bruns would score nine second-half points but Leppke’s 11 points really separated the two teams. The rest of the Lancers scored just 4 points but MCC just could not score. The Rebels scored 13 points in the second half and most took a great amount of time for success. Zoey Iverson led the Rebels in the second half with 5 points but no one else on the roster managed more than 2. The Lancers would lead the Rebels 42-30 at the end of regulation picking up their second win of the season.
The Rebels didn’t have a single-person score in double figures on Monday night. The Rebels gave up 27 turnovers in this game while forcing 22 points back. Emily Rohrer again led the Rebels in scoring with 9 points. Aidyn Bruns led the Lakers with 9 points and Kortney Leppke added 9 more. The Rebels would have a couple of days to practice before their first conference game of the season against Hills Beaver Creek Thursday night.
