The Murray County Central Rebel Girls wrapped up their season on Saturday in Worthington against the topseeded Southwest Minnesota Christian Eagles. The Eagles beat the Rebels twice in the regular season and this game wouldn’t be much different, as the Rebels would fall behind big early. For the Rebels, the point of playing on Saturday wasn’t about pulling off the biggest upset in SubSection history, it was simply being in the game itself that shows the Rebel’s growth. MCC has not played on a Super Saturday since 2019. It may seem like a small step but for the Rebels, hopefully, it’s the small step that leads to bigger strides.

The game itself sort of played out as one would expect in a 1 vs 8 matchup. The Eagles came out fast, as the Rebels showed some nerves, and built a double-digit lead in the first couple of minutes of the game. Casey Miller would hit a couple of three-point shots and Zoey Iverson played one of her best games of the season, but the Rebels trailed at the half 46 to 14. In the second half, the Rebels played some solid basketball to open the half and made the Eagles work over the first nine minutes of the half. The Eagles ramped up the pressure, trying to start the running clock, which they would do for the final 5:30 of the game. The Eagles got the easy win 73 to 30.

Casey Miller led the Rebels with 9 points in the game, while Abby Overman and Zoey Iverson each scored 7 points. Thea Schneider added 5 for the Rebels, as they finished the season with a 6 and 18 record. The Rebels lose Grace Williams, Alyssa Boerboom, Seanna Swenson, Karissa Hurd, Casey Miller, Zoey Iverson, and Mary Lou McNab to graduation and we wish them good luck in their next activities. The Rebels will return some experienced players like Abby Overman and Jayda Hellewell and an up-and-coming group of B-squaders who had a terrific season this year, splitting their time between varsity and JV. The Rebel C squad also had a strong season which points to stronger play at the varsity level in the future. Good luck to the Rebels in the offseason. That is where good teams in every sport are made.
