Murray County 4-H youth participated in an hour of coding to recognize National Computer Science Week. Youth gathered after school on December 7 to challenge themselves to code Edison Robots with both Block and Scratch coding languages.
Murray County 4-H purchased the Edison Robots in 2020 when youth were asking for robotics and coding opportunities within Murray County. The Edison robots allow for three languages of coding: block, scratch and python, which works well for youth of all ages. The three different levels allow 4-Hers to continue learning without having to purchase additional equipment.
“Coding seems tricky at first but once you start learning what the different functions mean it becomes more of a game, and you have to figure out the game,” said 4th grade 4-H member Isabela Schreier. The group was able to work with eight different challenges which included, directional paths, light reflection, patterns, and the robots’ following commands based on sound. A favorite of the 4-H’ers is to program the robots to play music, which this close to Christmas included “Jingle Bells” and “We Wish you a Merry Christmas“ while the Edison Robots worked their way through mazes and around obstacles set up by the coders.
4-H believes in hands on learning, which is what our robotic and coding classes offer. Youth design their program then download it to the robot. From there it’s trial and error to improve the coding until the youth’s programming goals are achieved.
