The Murray County Central Volleyball team opened their season on Tuesday September 1 with a road trip to Canby. The Rebels and the Lancers have squared off in the non-conference portion of the schedule for years but on Tuesday the Rebels were looking to pick up their first win over the Lancers in years. With the Lancers losing several key players from a great squad over the last handful of years, they have a very different looking lineup. The Rebels young up and comers are now upperclassmen looking to take the next steps.
The Rebels came out strong in the first game, getting some key hits from senior Erynn Rohrer and junior Reese Gilbertson. Aubrey Biegler picked up a couple of aces as the Reb-els took the first game 25 to 12 in dominating fashion. Between games 1 and 2 the Lancers settled themselves down and although they graduated much of their lineup from a year ago, they showed how winning tradition can carry from one season to the next even if it is just one game. The Lancers would dominate the rest of the game. MCC would struggle with serve receive and the passing for the Rebels did not allow many clean shots, making scoring difficult. The Lancers would win the next three games 25-18, 25-14, 25-19. MCC would take the loss 3 games to 1.
The Rebels first match-up did not go as they would have hoped, especially after the first game.
The Rebels won’t have to wait long for their next chance at their first win. MCC will be in Cottonwood to take on the Lakeview Lakers on Thursday night before having a long break and then they open the Red Rock Conference schedule against Mountain Lake Area Comfrey on the 17th. The Rebels have been on a climb each of the last handful of seasons and they will look to add another step on the climb starting Thursday.
