Earlier this year, MSHSL (Minnesota State High School League) voted for the installation of 35-second shot clocks for all high school basketball games starting in the 20232024 season. With the mandate, schools are responsible to pay for their own shot clocks.

The Murray County Central School District was again a generous recipient of a donation to cover the cost of the second gymnasium shot clocks. The family of Howard (Jake) Konkol, along with Jake’s sister Lorraine Anderson are proud to donate $6545.00 in Jake’s honor. All of Jake’s children are former Slayton High School graduates.

Jake, who passed away on July 29th 2022, is a former teacher and coach at Slayton High School. He began teaching in Slayton in 1957 and retired in 1991. He taught 7-8 math and science. Jake also coached football and basketball.

The new shot clocks will be installed in the gymnasiums this fall and will be ready for use in the 2023-24 season. Murray County Central Schools appreciates the generous donation from the family of Jake Konkel. Superintendent Joe Meyer stated “With the generous donation from the family of Jake Konkel, the district did not have to incur any additional costs due to the shot clock mandate. We are so appreciative of their generosity and are honored to carry on Jake’s memory.”

Earlier this summer, former teacher and coach Roger Huyink and his family donated the cost of the other set of shot clocks.
