Murray County Central spring sports were certainly exciting this year, with MCC athletes going to state in golf, track and baseball.

MCC Rebels Baseball headed up to state tournaments for the first time since 2001, walking away with a third-place victory in Class A.

MCC Baseball Coach Paul Counter said his players have a lot to be proud of.

“It is the best finish in MCC history,” he said Friday after the victory over the South Ridge Panthers. “And when the going got tough, our seniors really led the way.”

The Rebels played 22 innings of baseball in 24 hours at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud on June 11 and 12, winning a Thursday game against Ogilvie, losing to Madelia on Friday, then playing a second game Friday against South Ridge.

Senior Carter Hanson said one of his favorite parts of the tournament was the field in St. Cloud.

“It’s a really cool field,” he said.

His other favorite part? “Playing with all of the guys one last time,” he admitted. “After this I hang up the cleats and say good-bye to baseball.”

Of the game versus South Ridge, Hanson was happy with the results.

“We had a couple of bad innings, but we were able to shake it off and play baseball the way we have all year,” he stated.

Counter said the first game against Ogilvie was one that everyone will remember for a long time.

“The way that game ended – it was an awesome feeling,” he said of the Gabe Tentinger walk-off that tipped the scale in an overtime inning. “I was a little disappointed in the first game on Friday. We just didn’t play that great.”

Counter said Madelia has a talented team.

“I’m super proud of the way the guys bounced back in that third game,” he added.

When asked if he had anything else to add, Hanson laughed.

“Go, Rebels!” MCC Junior Tristan Berends was named to the Class A All-Tournament Team, while Senior Teague Meyer and Junior Krew Schneider were named to the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association All-State Team.
