The Flying Dutchmen and the MCC Rebels came into the game on Saturday in a similar fashion. The Rebels lost a tough game to Red Rock Central while Edgerton lost by two points to Westbrook Walnut Grove. The Flying Dutchmen were one game above 500 coming into the game while the Rebels were still looking for that third win of the season. The Flying Dutchmen would be the only team leaving the gym happy on Saturday.
The Flying Dutchmen are led on offense by the Red Rock Conference’s top scorer Alyda Vande Griend scoring just over 21 points per game and Mateya Gilbertson scores just shy of ten points per game. The Rebels don’t have anyone on the roster scoring more than 8 per game in conference play. The Dutchmen Duo led the way for their team Saturday. Vande Griend made six free throws in the first half on her way to 12 points. Gilbertson shot the ball well, scoring 11 first-half points. The Rebels, as a team, struggled on offense again with 16 turnovers and with Vande Griend patrolling the paint, MCC struggled to get open shots. The Rebels trailed at the half 34 to 21.
The second half wasn’t a good one for the Rebels. Though MCC was in the game at halftime, they were down 13. In the second half, MCC struggled to stay in the game, as Seanna Swenson was the only starter to score in the final 18 minutes. Swenson would score six points, but the majority of the Rebels’ points were scored in the final five minutes when the game was already decided. Vande Griend and Gilbertson combined for another 11 points in the second half but they were not needed to score much in the half. Edgerton would get the win 67 to 42.
The Rebels were led by Seanna Swenson who scored 11 points. Jayda Hellewell scored six points but didn’t play the final 20 minutes of the game due to an injury. The other Rebel starters combined for 4 points. Kelli Miller scored 8 off the bench for the Rebels and Thea Schneider scored 6 late in the game with Taylor Larson scoring 3. Alyda Vande Griend finished with 19 and Mateya Gilbertson scored 16. Rebels will play MLAC and WWG in their next two games.
