GREEN THUMB

It is March. Come next week will be the official start of spring on the calendar, but actual spring weather will have to wait a bit. We will know what Spring arrives by the weather, our yard and outside.

For one thing, the trees will start turning green as the leaves come out. on the ground the plants will emerge with some flowering promptly - tulips, for example, and dandelions.

Then, when the frost and frozen earth is gone it will be time to start our garden and yard work.

Seeds are already for sale in the stores. Transplantable plants will come soon. We might get some snow yet, maybe. Time will tell. If we do, it won’t last long. The snow won’t last long but we may get more. And then the yard (and garden) work will start in earnest.

In the meantime we looked over the seed displays in local stores. As for our own seeds from last year, seeds will generally last about three years before dying off within the seed and will need to be replaced. That’s another good reason to start your plants indoors and then transplant when the outside garden is ready.

Otherwise, don’t forget to make plans for outside planting on Good Friday. We usually plant a few potato eyes then so we can first say we did and then have new potatoes for July 4th.

Back inside, care for your house plants too. Not just watering, but maybe turn them around so another side faces the outside. That should keep you busy for another week of gardening. Until next week.
