GREEN THUMB

Our column is resuming this week. Our faithful computer we create the column on had a mishap and needed repairs. Happily it came back with some new parts and ready to go.

As for gardening and related we note several things of interest.

It is now Autumn. The days are getting shorter and rain is more frequent. Rain is nice but it would have been nicer had it come when it was quite dry.

Farmers have started harvesting. A little got done but now must wait until it dries up and hopefully the grain doesn’t rot.

As for our gardens, things are still progressing. Some large produce is still growing. We must have some place to store it when harvesting comes.

We’ve already talked about canning things for winter meals. Supplies - canning equipment and items to can are available.

We can also plant our second garden. Our emails list some salad items (radishes and lettuce, for example) can still be planted which will be ready for the dinner table before cold weather and freeze up.

And the lawn continues to need mowing.

Since it is now October, some of you will be investing in a big pumpkin to be made into a Jack o ‘Lantern. And maybe get a few to be made into pies as needed.

The same for other garden produce. and if you didn’t raise any there are many produce stands still around to help you stock up as needed.

As for working hours, most work will now be done on week-ends. So will other outside work.

In years past we had to change the window screens for storm windows.

Then the garage needs to be cleaned out too.

We’ve mentioned second gardens. Along that line we see good sale prices on whatever they sell for next year’s gardens and this year’s fall plantings.

Also there’s what needs planting for future years - fruit trees, bushes, and flowers (tulips for example). Thankfully current watering is being done via the weather.

The problem is to get your needs done before it gets too cold outside. And then to store your garden and yards tools. And maybe keep an eye out for pre-season sales on snow removal equipment. Also try starting your snow blower if you already have one. Do service now before a blizzard.

A magazine article tells us to bring in your house plants now so they get adjusted to being back inside rather than the night before a frost. Then check your house humidifier too.

This should be enough to keep you busy until cold weather really sets in.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac warns us that the first frost might be too soon.

October 1st in some years. Try planting some lettuce anyhow.

Until next week.
