GREEN THUMB

The snowstorm of the past week reminded us of some past storms too. This writer was discussing it with another dining patron at a local restaurant. His story came when he was living in the mountains of Colorado. One time a snowstorm came in. Advance warning said it would be a big one and to stock up the pantry well. This turned out to be very correct.

When the storm was over most houses had snow at least half way up the windows and outside doors. They got out ok, but no snowplows. As he told it one neighbor had breakfast for the neighborhood. Another had the neighbors over for noon lunch. This went on for several days. Even Denver had several days before snowplows came around. It was 10 days before the snowplows came to their town. Obviously quite memorable.

We also remember the author Laura Ingalls Wilder, in one of her books, told of when on Christmas Eve a snowstorm hit and the family had some emergency guests. The memorable part was that Christmas morning the guests had to have Christmas presents. The Ingalls didn’t have much more than necessities of their own. Anyhow Mother Ingalls gave away one of her prized possessions.

This column will arrive in your mailboxes the week before Christmas. We hope you have your plans in place and don’t have a similar snowstorm.

Also remember what Christmas means - the birth of Christ. Observe and remember.

In the meantime don’t forget your house plants - and inside pets too. They need water and care. Until next week.
