George Whitefield was a very powerful evangelist in the 1700’s and worked closely with John and Charles Wesley. His ministry brought many people to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. He preached very often on John 3:3 where Jesus said, “Except a man be born-again, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.” When he was on his death bed, one of his final statements was, “I go to my everlasting rest. My sun has risen, shone, and is setting – nay, it is about to rise and shine forever. I have not lived in vain. And though I could live to preach Christ a thousand years, I die to be with Him, which is far better.”
Have you ever read comparisons of the final words of Christians and atheists who were dying? The poor atheists face death with uncertainty; they cannot help but wonder if there really is a God, a heaven, and a hell. Is there such a thing as eternal punishment? Or do we just die and disappear?
They have no assurance. They are filled with doubts and fears. It’s terribly sad to report this but Scripture tells us that when they do die, they will find themselves in hell. Not because they have been such terrible people, but because they refused God’s free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. God tells us that hell was made for the devil and his angels, not for mankind. But, if man wants to serve Satan, he will spend eternity with him in the eternal Lake of Fire. (Revelations 20: 11-15).
Please, do not go there! Jesus did all He did so that we can have an abundant life and then spend all of eternity with Him. But Jesus is the only way we can make it to heaven. (John 14:6). If you are not saved – your time is running out. You may die suddenly, unexpectedly. Repent, come to Jesus and have your name written down in the Lamb’s Book of Life. You can then face death as a Christian.
God bless.
