GET THE DIRT

By Kathy Schwartz, Murray County Master Gardener To protect the trunks of young trees, use a loose wire mesh barrier around the lower trunk to keep rodents from chewing the tender bark.

This is the most critical month for our lawns. It is the best time to fertilize, aerate, control broadleaf weeds and establish a new lawn or renovate any lawn.

Take a screwdriver and penetrate the soil. If it goes in smoothly (with a small amount of resistance) you do NOT need to aerate. Run the aerator over your lawn in one direction and then go back in a perpendicular direction.
