Then on Friday night the Warriors hosted a quad in Fulda against Luverne(win 5923), St. James(40-34), and Ortonville( after these duals gained the sixth seed going into the section tournament and will take on the Pipestone Arrows in Pipestone on Thursday February 16 at 7pm for a chance to enter the Final Four of the section held in Lamberton Saturday.
First up in Granite Falls were the Pipestone Arrows and after a loss last year in the section, the Arrows have the Warriors in their sights looking for wins. Kaston Clarke was the first wrestler up and took on Carloseriel Perez-Garcia. Kaston took a decision win, going the distance with 2 escapes, a takedown, two reversals, and a nearfall at the final buzzer to secure the win at 106 for the Warriors putting them up 0-3 after the 1st bout.
Kaden Landsman had Miklo Hernandez and fell behind quickly, as Hernandez found a weak spot in Landsman’s defense and took 3 takedowns in the first period, letting Landsman up for two escape points. (6-2) Then it slowed a bit in the 2nd period, as Landsman began blocking the offense of Hernandez and only allowed 1 point to Hernandez with an escape out of the referees position. The third period Landsmen got his offense going and scored out of bottom with an escape. Then, as Hernandez got in on a leg, Landsman had the whizzer defense and scored a takedown, making the final score of the match 8-5 after an escape by Hernandez, giving the Arrows a decision. (3-3) At 120, Teague Meyer had some trouble getting his offense going against Brayden Burmeister and took a fall in the 2nd period. (9-3) He was followed by Torrin Clarke, who made the distance against Haden Mulvihill losing by major decision 14-1. (13-3) Denver Ash and Hudson Burnett, of the Arrows took to the mat at the 132 bout, where Ash fell in the second period making the team score 19-3 in favor of the Arrows. Aiden Lorenzen took Davis Budden the distance and showed some heart in the 3rd period scoring on an escape and a takedown to hold Budden to a decision.(22-3) Quintin Lewis outwrestled Rich Sobrecary in every way and with 3 nearfalls just couldn’t get the pin, but gave the team 2 bonus points with a technical fall.(22-8) Owen Olsem did much the same in his match-up against Carlos SaenLouangrau and scored on a fall, evening the score to 22-14.
Senior Carter Benda, after handfighting through the 1st period, scored on an escape in the second period to get the lead in the match, but Lucas Thooft of the Arrows answered quickly with a takedown and a pin making the team score 28-14.
Luke Iverson, at 170, performed very well against the Arrows’ Xavier Banjoko. After suffering the initial takedown in the first period, Iverson scored on a reversal, sitting out and turning in. Starting on top in the second period, Iverson couldn’t hold Banjoko, as he scored the escape and scored on Iverson with another takedown. With both wrestlers starting neutral in the third period, Luke Iverson showed some real heart and took Banjoko down in the scramble with a whizzer, then put him on his back with a Witzel, scoring a 3 point nearfall and securing the win(7-5) coming from behind with the 5 point move.(28-17) Carson Klein’s match went much the same, as he scored with a 5 point move in the third period but allowed Jackson Melcher too many points early on and finished with a final score 11-9 allowing a decision.(31-17) After the Warriors open weight at 195, giving another 6 to the Arrows, freshman Colby Kesteloot of the Warriors, took on the very tall Senior, Aiden Voss, of the Arrows. Colby stayed in good position after being taken down in the 1st period, and starting neutral in the second period gave up a takedown of which he was able to quickly escape at the end of the period. The third period went much the same. Starting neutral Kesteloot suffered the takedown, but this time starting on bottom after going out of bounds, Kesteloot caught one of Voss’s legs on the way in, stood up and put Voss on his back earning a reversal and a nearfall for a total of 4 points ending the match 7-5.(40-17) With the Arrows open at Heavyweight Rylan Klein took a forfeit and ended the dual 40-23.
Next in line for the Mighty Warriors were the Minneota Vikings. Always a formidable opponent, the Vikings took the 1st three weights. Kaston Clarke, at 106, fell to a tight cradle in the 1st period, while Kaden Landsman and Teague Meyer both took their Viking opponents the distance, losing by decision each. Then Torrin Clarke, scoring on a single leg took Brenten Coequyt to the mat for two and began working an armbar. Eventually, Clark, with a crossface cradle, put Coequyt to his back for a two point nearfall. In the 2nd period, Clarke, starting on top, stacked Coequyt up on his shoulders, pinning him for 6 team points.
Denver Ash lost by major decision to Payton Gillund. Aiden Lorenzen pinned Ezequiel Monzon with 7 seconds left in the 2nd period. With Quintin Lewis losing by fall in the 1st period to Brock Fier, and Noah Mathiowetz losing by techfall to Destin Fier, the Vikings were up 27-12. It would by hard to come back.
After Carter Benda fell to Zach Fier, Luke Iverson drew Noah Goreeler and gave up a 5 point move in the first period. This didn’t falter Iverson, as he started the 2nd period with fire, scoring 2 on a reversal, coming out from bottom at the whistle, then riding out Goreeler for the remainder of the period. Starting in neutral position in the 3rd period and needing a takedown to tie the score, Iverson got it with about 5 seconds left, fighting for a single leg. Then, in sudden victory, Iverson got a cradle from a front headlock and put Goreeler on the mat, then circled around, scoring his two for the win.(33-13 Vikings) Carson Klein went the distance at 182 with Alex DePestel and came up short, but only losing by major decision.
With an open weight at 195, the Warriors fell to a deeper deficit (43-15), before Colby Kesteloot confidently walked on the mat to take on Joe Verschelde and scored on a 5 point move in the first period, with an underhook trip. Verschelde, in the second period, made his mistake going toe to toe with Kesteloot, as Kesteloot wasted no time getting his underhooks in, locking his hands behind Verschelde’s back and putting him to the mat for the 18 second pin. With a final score of 49-21 after a fall in the heavyweight bout to Hudson Scholten of the Vikings, the Warriors would look forward to the Quad County Cobras.
The Warriors put points on the board with wins from Teague Meyer who pinned Dane Hildahl at 1:30 and Denver Ash pinning Gage Wilke 1:28 into the 3rd period. Carson Lewis had the opportunity to show off some of his newfound skills against Owen Cherveny, scoring the initial takedown in the 1st period, then fighting through a reversal in the second period and scoring a reversal of his own, followed by a 3 and a 2 point nearfall, he started the 3rd period with a 9-6 lead. After giving up an escape and a takedown, Lewis ended up in a cradle losing by pinfall in the third period, but still showing good promise.
Carson Klein went the distance with Hunter Ridler and thensome. Tied after 3 periods and still tied after sudden victory, the wrestlers, exhausted, went into double and triple overtime and after 6 periods of wrestling, Klein lost the match, allowing an escape. Still, an incredible event to see these boys put the effort in that they do.
The Warriors eventually lost the dual to the Cobras with a final score of 50-24.
Friday night at home in Fulda, the Warriors turned the page and swept three teams in a quadrangular.
Ortonville were 66-0 with pins from Kaston Clarke, Lucas Kuball, Owen Olsem, Carson Lewis and Luke Iverson. Teague Meyer, and Noah Mathiowetz both won by decision. With only one loss at the 138 bout the Warriors took the Ortonville Trojans 66-9. Against Luverne, the Warriors pulled another win with a pin at 106 by Kaston Clarke, 132 Denver Ash, 138 Lucas Kuball, 145 Noah Mathiowetz, 160 Carson Lewis, Carson Klein, and a barn burner at 220 with Colby Kesteloot, who, waiting until the third period, up 15-2 got the pin against Kane Akkerman. The Warriors took the win from Luverne with a final score of 59-23 Last, but not least, was St. James and the Warriors would record pinfalls for the first 4 weights as Kaston Clarke, Brayden Gilb, Teague Meyer, and Torrin Clarke all made short work of their opponents in the 1st period.
Lucas Kuball just couldn’t get his offense going as he took a 7-15 loss by major decision against Talyn Tanae. Denver Ash was much the same at 138, losing by major decision to Kollin Anderson. Aiden Lorenzen took a fall against Levi Miest. Carter Benda went the distance and didn’t allow Hayden Davis to score, winning the match 12-0. Luke Iverson took a fall against Peyton Wolner, and Colby Kesteloot lost by decision to Julio Esqueda, followed by Rylan Klein, taking a fall at 285 against Willie Curry. Due to the lower weights getting their wins, the Warriors pulled off the sweep of the quadrangular and look forward to wrestling Pipestone on Thursday for the third time this season, to make the final four this weekend in Lamberton.
