It’s been a long, cold winter and the increase in home heating prices has put a strain on many people’s budget. If you are struggling to pay energy bills, Community Development Director Jase Pater of the Southwestern Minnesota Opportunity Council encourages you to apply for grant funds to help cover your costs. “We are trying to spread awareness that financial assistance is available for energy bills.”

Mr. Pater works from the office in Worthington that serves mainly Nobles, Murray, Rock and Pipestone counties in Minnesota. He explained, “SMOC is a nonprofit community action agency that serves low income persons in a variety of areas. The Energy Assistance Program offers grants between $300 and $2000 to qualifying households for the cold weather season.” Mr. Pater stated the grant offered is based on the gross income of a household, but “low income” may not be as low as most people think. “For a household of four people the income before taxes can be up to $67,000 per year. The state uses a sliding scale with a formula based on income, consumption and cost of energy.” All heating sources are included, such as gas, propane, electricity and fuel oil. Recipients provide a copy of their bill that includes an account number and the funds are sent directly to the vendor. “The program operates from October 1st through March 31st however the funds are a credit on your account until they are used or until May 31st,” said Mr. Pater. “There are still funds available for this season so it’s not too late to apply.” He added that when all the proper documentation is obtained most qualifying households are contacted within one week. And if you happen to move to another county in Minnesota during the winter season, your funds can move with you.
