The Hadley Buttermakers managed one victory over the week but had a disappointing Sunday as they got outplayed and outpitched in losing a double-header. Here is the week’s recap:
Wednesday at Worthington
The Buttermakers traveled to Worthington to take on Gopher League opponent, Cubs. Hadley had no problem with the under-manned Cub team as they defeated Worthington 14-2 in a 7-inning contest.
Things started out slow for both teams before Hadley got things started in the 3rd inning. Hadley would bring 11 men to bat and get 6 hits and score 6 runs for the lead. Two Cub fielding errors aided in the Buttermakers’ scoring. Worthington would put a run on the board in the bottom of the inning for a 6-1 Hadley advantage. Hadley would add 1 run in both the 4th and 5th inning on a wild pitch and passed ball to forge ahead 8-1. Worthington would score their 2nd run in the 5th inning.
Worthington made a pitching change in the 6th that the Buttermakers would take advantage of. Hadley would bat 12 batters and score 6 times on 4 hits. Two more Cub errors and 4 walks led to the Buttermaker scoring. Hadley would collect 3 doubles in the inning with Alex Petersen getting a bases clearing 3-run double to start the scoring off for Hadley.
Derek Platt led the Buttermaker hitting attack with 3 hits. Joe Larson, Danny Blankenship, Alex Petersen, and Kyler Deacon all had 2 hits with Nick Bruning and Max Zwart adding 1 hit apiece. Alex Petersen led the rbi count with 5 rbis, Trent Carlson, Danny Blankenship and Joe Larson had 2 rbis and Max Zwart was credited with 1 rbi. Avery Weber went 6 innings for the victory. Trent Carlson pitched the 7th inning.
Sunday Game 1 vs. Luverne
The Luverne Redbirds came to town to take on the Buttermakers with 2nd place in the Gopher League on the line. Both teams were tied in the loss column with 2 losses, but Luverne had 2 games and an earlier victory over the Buttermakers in their favor
Jacob Van Dam started on the mound to stop the Redbirds, but things did not work the way things Hadley planned. Luverne would get to Van Dam right off the bat as they scored 9 runs on 6 hits to take charge of the game.
In the 2nd inning, Hadley would come fighting back when they pushed across 6 runs on only 2 hits to trail 9-6. Luverne would storm back by adding 9 more runs on Hadley in the 3rd inning as Hadley’s pitching and defensive blew up. Luverne would only collect 4 hits in the inning. Jaden Bloemendahl would take over on the mound.
Hadley did not give up. Hadley would score once in the 4th to go down 18-7. Luverne would add 2 runs in the 5th inning to increase the lead to 20-7. In the bottom of the inning. Alex Petersen would get a mini rally started by blasting a solo homerun. By the time the inning ended, Hadley would score 5 more times to go down 20-13. That would be all the runs Hadley could muster.
Luverne would add 5 more runs off Derek Platt in the final 2 frames to take a 25-13 victory.
Alex Petersen led Hadley with 2 hits. Derek Platt, Joe Larson, Nick Bruning, Danny Blankenship, Trent Carlson, and Kyler Deacon all had 1 hit. Nick Bruning was credited with 3 rbis with Derek Platt and Joe Larson credited with 2 rbis. Alex Petersen, Trent Carlson, and Kyler Deacon all had 1 rbi. Jacob Van Dam was charged with the loss.
Game 2 vs. Jackson
Hadley faced the Jackson Bulls from the First Nite League in Sunday’s baseball in a nonleague game.
Nick Bruning would start the game on the mound for Hadley. Things started out well for Hadley as they would go up 2-0 in the 1st inning thanks to a double by Nick Bruning and single from Alex Petersen. The lead was short-lived as Jackson would score 4 runs in the 2nd on no hits as Hadley’s pitching fell apart. Avery Weber would come into pitch. Hadley would tie the game in the bottom of the inning as Jackson’s pitching had a slight hiccup. Hadley’s runs came without a hit.
Hadley would take back the lead in the 3rd on a sacrifice fly out by Trent Carlson. Avery would run into problems in the 4th inning. Avery would give up a 3-run homerun to put Jackson in the lead at 7-5. A Danny Blankenship single would plate a run for Hadley in the bottom of the 4th for a 7-6 Hadley deficit.
Jackson would put up 9 runs on Hadley in the 5th off an array of Buttermaker pitchers. The game was called after 5 innings with Jackson winning 16-6.
Danny Blankenship, Nick Bruning, Alex Petersen, and Avery Weber would get the only hits for Hadley. Danny Blankenship led Hadley with 2 rbis with Trent Carlson, Alex Petersen and Nick Bruning picking up Hadley’s other rbis. Avery Weber was charged with the loss.
Hadley will be on the road the next week. On Wednesday they will travel to Lakefield to take on the Horned Frogs and then a double header on Sunday when they travel to Heron Lake for a 2:00 pm match-up and then head north to Milroy to take on the Irish.
