The C-team comes away with a victory defeating HBC’s C-team in a barn burner 32-29. Turnovers and rebounding plagued the boys at times, but solid defense, ball movement, and free throws were key to the win. Hudson Schryvers led the Rebels with 10 points, Gavin Gillette had 8, both Dylan Kluis and Jackson Kramer had 5, and Andrew Holm and Drew Wajer each had 2 apiece.
The B-squad loses their first game of the season by 7 to HBC, 37-30. A tough offensive night had MCC scrambling from behind the entire game. Turnovers and outside shooting halted the undefeated Rebels in their tracks. Turning the ball over 21 times and going 0-14 from beyond the arc. A better effort in the second half gave the Rebels a chance, but the deficit was just too much to overcome. Bryce Hoekman scored 15 of the teams 30, Ross Englekes had 11, and Carter Lewis had 4 points.
The varsity would head to Hills on a two game winning streak looking to make it three and gain a conference and section win. A feisty HBC team would stand in there was Tuesday night.
The first half started off a little sloppy for both squads. The ball was hard to handle as it would bounce from one player to another to another in the early going. The game felt like it was just waiting for someone to take control and run with it. After HBC took the early lead, the Rebels did just that. Using strong full court pressure as we have come accustomed to seeing with this team, MCC would string together stops, deflections, and steals to take control. Abe Paulzine, Derek Kluis, and Christian Tentinger would all connect on 3’s in the first half as well giving the Rebels momentum. Chant Mitchell, Aidan Dierks, and Tanner Graphenteen would all contribute in the scorer’s column giving the Rebels a total of 29 first half points. Tentinger would lead the team with 9 first half points and Kluis and Dierks would each have 5 apiece. Even with the balanced scoring attack the Rebels would find themselves in foul trouble to end the first half. The senior post players Nate Kleven and Chant Mitchell would have to sit a large chunk of the end of the first half and HBC would make a run. Down as many as 15 points in the first half, HBC would rally back and cut the game to just 5 points going into the break. 29-24.
The second half would take on a similar look on the offense end for MCC as six Rebels would get their names in the scoring column, but the MCC defense would be dominant. Giving up 24 first half points is a solid effort, but in the second half the Rebels would only allow 21 more. Kleven and Tentinger were all over the glass, eating up 9 rebounds each. The defensive pressure wore on HBC as they had double digit turnovers in the second half and close to 30 in the game. MCC had a total of 12, taking care of the basketball like an experienced unit gave the Rebels many good trips on the offensive end of the floor.
When it was all said and done MCC would win the ball game 59-45 earning a three game winning streak going into Thursday’s showdown with TMB at Tracy who is riding a 4 game winning streak.
