APRIL 27: BOYS IN SANBORN, GIRLS IN FULDA MCC competed in their first of four varsity conference meets on Thursday 4-27-23. The boys made their way to Sanborn, while the girls went to Fulda.

The MCC Rebels played two games on the road this past week to wrap up a busy week with four games in five days. The Rebels lost to MLAC by one run in extra innings on Monday and then bounced back to beat HLOF 16-1 on Tuesday. The Rebels on Thursday, May 4 were taking on RRC/WWG for the second time this season. The Rebels beat the Charging Falcons 10-3 on April 18th in Slayton. This game would be different as RRC/WWG would lead early on and the Rebels had to play from behind.

In what was a long week, the MCC Rebels were looking to finish the week with 3 wins and 1 loss. The Rebels were on the road to Cottonwood to play the Lakeview Lakers who were also coming off a win on Thursday, May 5. The Rebels had just 6 regular season games left heading to Lakeview, with three more games in a Jackson tournament on the schedule for the rest of the year. With playoff seeding coming up, every game is important. The Rebels got the win they were looking for, while getting everyone into the action on Friday.

In 2020, the MCC coaching staff thought it would be fun to put on a true “relay” meet where all events are based on team performance. Unfortunately, that season was canceled and the 2021 season had many restrictions. In 2022, their vision became a reality and the relay meet would be held again in 2023 with the delight of those participating and attending. While still having the traditional 4x100, 4x200, 4x400, and 4x800 relays this meet included many seldom ran running events. Those events include the sprint medley relay (200200-400-800), distance medley (400-400-800-1600), Rudy relay (100-200-300-400) and a co-ed hurdle shuttle relay.

Dylan Kluis was brilliant on the hill on Thursday, as Kluis threw a no-hitter to lead MCC past HLO/F 12-0 MCC secured the victory thanks to nine runs in the fourth inning. The Rebels’ big bats were led by Tanner Graphenteen, Carter Benda, Abe Paulzine, Jaeden Deacon, Krew Schneider, and Aidan Dierks all driving runs in the frame.

The true team series was originated in 1987 by the State Track and Field Coaches Association, to address the need in Track and Field for a True TEAM competition. In previous years, a team with a few elite athletes could win the “Team Championship” in a large meet. The Coaches felt the Team Championship should be won by the best TEAM.
