On Thursday December 8th the FMCC Warrior wrestling team hosted a quadrangular meet with the Marshall Tigers, Adrian Dragons, and the Windom/Mountain Lake Cobras and packed the house. Its been many years since the Warriors have packed a house like the did on Thursday and the went on to make a pretty decent showing winning 1 out of the 3 duals.
First up were the Marshall Tigers and after Kaston Clarke at 106 fell to Lincoln Christensen in the first period, Brayden Gilb put on a terrific showing against Sam Deutz at 113. Gilb after giving up an early takedown and nearfall in the fist period and going into the 2nd period with a 5 point deficit, scored a takedown and a nearfall of his own tying up the match. Deutz was able to escape from bottom and score an escape point putting him up 6-5 going into the third period. To start out the 3rd period, Gilb starting in bottom referees position Deutz got a little high on Gilb and Gilb was able to grab Deutzs’ head and pull him to the mat and cover him earning a reversal and a 2pt nearfall making the score 9-6 Gilb. Deutz wasn’t done and kept wrestling earning an escape and quickly taking Gilb down tying the score 9-9. All Brayden Gilb had to do was earn one more escape point for the win with 27 seconds left in the match and he did it making the team score 6-3.
Teague Meyer at 120 took on Dawson DeCamp and wrestled very hard keeping the match close for three periods earning two great escape points, but couldn’t hang on falling with 34 seconds left in the 3rd period.
Lucas Kuball, Denver Ash, and Aiden Lorenzen couldn’t get their offense going and despite their best efforts fell to their opponent giving the Tigers a commanding lead. 36-3 Quintin Lewis at 152 made an excellent showing commanding his match against the Tigers Brandon Simpson. Simpson made the first move getting in on a leg of Lewis, but Lewis reaches back and with hands on knee and elbow of Simpson was able to breech and free his leg and spinning behind Simpson scoring the two point takedown. Taking an arm with as he went behind he had an arm bar, and started the turn, to a double chicken wing going a little further, then a wing and a half nelson for the turn and a three point nearfall to finish out the period. Starting neutral in the second period Simpson got in on a leg again this time Lewis shucked him to the side quickly getting behind him. Lewis put Simpson on his back with a two on one tilt hanging on to one arm put the half on and got the stick with an knuckle roll armbar for the 6 team point pin.
The Warriors were open at 160, 182, and 195 taking a loss at 170, then Colby Kesteloot put on a show of his own defending himself against the onslaught brought on by Gavin Schaefer. Going into the third period where Colby was able to put Schaefer on his back getting a couple points Kesteloot kept wrestling and gave everything he had, but just got over powered only giving up a major decision.
Another open Weight at 285 put the Warriors way behind the Tigers losing the dual 67-9 The Adrian Dragons were next on the list after a ton of JV wrestling which was very exciting to watch as you get a chance to see the whole of the Warrior wrestling team and where they are headed. The wrestling program is up to about 30 kids that make a practice room where there is a lot of competition putting these kids in a good place as the season and years go on.
Teague Meyer after a couple of quick losses at 106 and 113 went three periods against Travis Weiss just coming up short after some great scrambles holding Weiss to 6 points giving a decision to the dragons.
Lucas Kuball took on Jesse Bullerman at 132 after an open weight at 126 where Kuball got in on a single leg and lifted it high to fight off a deep whizzer putting Bullerman to the mat scoring a takedown. Kuball then gave a powerful crossface getting a two on one pulling Bullermans arms together, then spinning on his toes twisting Bullerman to his back in a Minnesota twist, pinning Bullerman, earning 6 team points.
Denver Ash at 138 Took on Carlos Castillo and after 1:30 of handfighting for position Ash got in on a single leg and switching mid stride to a double brought Castillo to the mat for the takedown and 2 points. The 2nd period started with Ash on top in the referees position where he secured an armbar and a knuckleroll for the turn then finished Castillo off with a Knuckleroll half for the pin and 6 team points.
Aiden Lorenzen started his match off with a Blast singleleg scoring an early takedown on Bruce Farinella then let him go for a fresh start only to hit him again with a textbook Double leg finishing out the period 4-1. The second period starting on the bottom Lorenzen bounced to his feet catchning Farinella’s hands and turned in to him scoring the escape. A perfectly executed heel-toe-knee got Lorenzen in on Farinellas leg scoring on another single finishing out the period 7-1. The third period Farinella found a break as Lorenzen got high on his head slipping off and Farinella covered scoring 3 points. Lorenzen was able to keep his composure and finish out the match with an 8-5 decision.
Quintin Lewis suffered an onslaught of takedown offense by Rilee Heidebrink going down 7-1 after the first period, then giving up another escape and takedown in the second period. Lewis started his comeback late in the second period scoring an escape. Then in the 3rd period Lewis started on top referees position wasted no time for the crossface nearside cradle and Hidebrick was on his back with the referee counting then slamming his hand scoring the pin for Lewis after a 10-2 deficit.
Carson Lewis coming in at 170 from the basketball court to the wrestling room made his varsity debut against the Adrian dragons Breyer Hieronimus. Carson looks like he’s been wrestling just as long as anyone else on the team wrestling very strong, but couldn’t defend against Hieronimus attacks and suffered a fall.
Carson Klein took Micah Bullerman for the distance scoring the first takedown and riding out the first period. Then in the second earned a quick reversal out of the bottom then giving up an escape which would be Bullerman’s only point in the match. The third period was all Klein again choosing to start on bottom earning a quick escape then taking Bullerman to the mat with a single leg and riding legs to finish out the match and a 7-1 victory.
The Adrian Dragons were too much this early in the year for the Warriors but look out as Henning, Kramer, and Hartle fine tune these athletes and start filling in weights.
Last but definitely not least the Warriors were up against Kulseth and his Cobras. Kaston Clarke was first out of the stable pinning Jacob Lopez in thirty seconds with a knuckle roll armbar. Brayden Gilb followed drawing Matthew Voehl and losing by a pinfall.
Teague Meyer at 126 took on Kameron Koerner and put on a scoring show taking Koerner to the mat first with a tight double leg then secured a 3 point nearfall with a cradle. Then after losing his grip he suffered a reversal but kept his 5-2 lead going into the second period. Meyer choosing to start neutral in the second period confident with his takedown did it again and brought Koerner to the mat with another blast double only to suffer a reversal by Koerner. Meyer Kept his composure though and got two back with a go behind reversal of his own finishing out the second period on top 9-5. The third period Koerner needing points started on the bottom only to suffer a 2 point nearfall by Meyer where he scored on his own reversal of which Meyer was able to build a base and earn an escape. Koerner desperate for points shot in on Meyer bringing him to the mat for a takedown closing the gap 12-8 but Meyer kept his mind clear not going to his back fighting hard on the bottom with good defense earned a penalty point and an escape and stayed away finishing the match 14-8.
Lucas Kuball had a commanding first period showing his skills as a technician scored a takedown with an ankle pick off the whistle then a cradle nearfall for a 5-0 lead. Jared Hunter of the Cobras reversed on Kuball for 2 of which Kuball earned his escape quickly and took him down again finishing the period strong with an 8-2 lead. Hunter choosing bottom slid out of Kuballs grasp for a reversal and put Kuball to the mat pinning him winning the match from way behind with 20 seconds left in the period.
Denver Ash even though he showed some promise in the first period gave up his back to the mat one minute into the second period.
Aiden Lorenzen at 145 put on a fireworks show in his match going back and forth with Noah Holmberg. Lorenzen fought out of the underhook with a perfectly executed hi crotch putting Holmberg to the mat and rolling him to his back earning a nearfall of which Holmberg was able to escape. Going into the second period with a 5-1 lead and starting on top Holmberg needing points scored his escape and got his hooks in throwing Lozenzen to his back getting the lead 7-5 going into the third period. Choosing top Lorenzen muscled out and earned his escape then another hi crotch got him the lead 8-7. Holmberg rolled through the takedown and both wrestlers were on their feet again. Lorenzen attacked bringing Homberg to the mat once more but couldn’t hold him and Holmberg sat out and turned in scoring two on a reversal, but Lorenzen didn’t stop wrestling scoring a reversal of his own and caught Holmberg in a half putting his shoulder to the mat and with the crowd on its feet the referee slammed the mat just a the towel boy stopped the match awarding Lorenzen with the pin with 1 second left.
Quintin Lewis scored another 6 points for the team on a quick takedown followed by a effortlessly looking knuckleroll half against Brayten Stewart in thirty five seconds.
Carter Benda after waiting through 2 duals and about thirty JV matches got his chance to wrestle and did an excellent job waiting for just the right opportunity setting up the blast double for 2 right at the end of the first period. After and eventless second period Montgomery Bjorklund chose the neutral position to start the third period and Benda took him down only to give up a reversal, and with good determination and willingness to win Benda earned his escape and took Bjorklund down one more time and finished on top with a 7-2 victory earning another three points for the team.
Following a tough loss by Weston Kruger Colby Kesteloot pinned Damian Pohlman snapping him down with a go behind then securing a knuckleroll half for the pin.
With an already excited crowd ready for more at heavyweight Broox Platt drew Cyrus Bjorklund and after some respect given by both wrestlers keeping their distance with some hand fighting Platt closed the distance and caught Bjorklund in a single leg. falling to the matt Platt on top started his pinning combination of which the only defense Bjorklud had was to go on his back and with the falling of the hand awarding him with his first pin in his first match on this his varsity wrestling debut got his hand raised and there was a ecstatic crowd as the warriors won their dual 48-30 against the Windom Mountain lake Cobras.
On Saturday the FMCC Wrestling team travelled to Jackson, MN for the JCC wrestling tournament and finished 10th in the 17 team tournament with four individual place winners. Teague Meyer took 6th place at 120, Denver Ash 4th place at 138, Quintin Lewis took fifth at 152, and Rylan Klein also took 5th at 285.
The Wrestling team looks forward to the Redwood riot in redwood falls this Friday and Saturday December 16th and 17th.
