On December 14th the FMCC Warrior Wrestling team traveled to Lamberton and made an excellent showing against the Red Rock Central Falcons, and the Pipestone Arrows Wrestling teams in a triangular dual meet.
The Pipestone Arrows would be the first team for the Warriors to dual, and Mason Kirchner would be the lead off wrestler at 107. Kirchner took on Carloseriel Perez-Garcia of the Arrows and proceeded to get his underhooks in early in the match and Carloseriel capitalized with a defensive attack and pinned Kirchner at 55 seconds in the 1st period.
The executive minds of the FMCC team moved the wrestlers up 1 weight to avoid the state ranked Miklo Hernandez at 114 by giving him a forfeit. Now, the 114 pounder Kaston Clarke would take on the 121 pounder Andres Guardado. Getting through the 1st period, unscathed, the wrestlers began the second period both up. Guardado would be the first to attack with a takedown and Clarke would earn the escape for the second period making the score 2-1 Guardado. Clarke started the second period down in the referees position, earned another escape and took Guardado down on the edge of the mat by his ankles, scoring a takedown and getting the lead 4-2. Clarke gave a tough ride, but Guardado would earn an escape and close the gap. Clarke held his lead and made a 3 point decision win for the team with a final score of 4-3.
Brayden Gilb was next up to take on Jibril Razzaq. Gilb wasted no time and immediately started his scoring with a double leg take down getting the 4 nearfall points with an arm and a half. Starting the second period with a commanding 6-1 lead Gilb chose both up and this time caught Razzaq with the double underhooks and brought him to the mat twisting his arms in a butcher and scoring the fall for the team, closing the gap on the team score 12-9 Pipestone.
The 133# bout brought Teague Meyer to the stage against Brayden Burmeister where Meyer would wrestle his way through 4 nearfalls, 2 takedowns, and a reversal before losing by Tech. fall giving 5 points to Pipestone, but avoiding the 6 point pin.
The Pipestone Hammer Hudson Burnett made short work at the 139 bout leading to the 145 bout and the “Cowboy” Aiden Lorenzen went head to head with Haden Mulvihill and took two points out of the gate with a High Crotch takedown in the first period. Starting neutral in the second period Mulvihill found a single leg and tied the score on Lorenzen. Lorenzen, undisturbed, rolled to an escape and scored on a blast double leg and took the lead 5-2. Starting bottom in the third period, Mulvihills only points would come by way of an escape and dodged Lorenzens attempts fighting hands. (Warriors 12, Arrows 23) The Mighty “O” Owen Olsem at 152 lbs took on Oliver Villa and scored the 1st takedown with a solid go behind and Villa busted out scoring an escape and taking 1 point back. Choosing down, up by 1 going into the 2nd period, Olsem fought to escape. Then from neutral scored another takedown on a single leg bringing Mulvihill to the mat and worked a combination, ending with a skunked half for the pin. (Warriors 18, Arrows 23) “Q” Quintin Lewis next on the docket for the Warriors wrestling up at 160 against the Arrows’ Lucas Thooft scored his 1st takedown with a Russian tie and catching an armbar for nearfall. Thooft chose bottom in referees position and suffered a quick turn by Lewis of which he was able to reverse and score his own two points. Lewis, with solid chain wrestling, held on and scored his own reversal from underneath Thooft. Choosing down with a score of 8-2 going into the third period looking for bonus points Lewis sat out and turned in for the escape. Thooft scored on a takedown late in the third period and gave up a point stalling. After going out of bounds and starting center of the mat Thooft, looking for points started in the option position and Lewis heroically capitalized on his attack, catching an arm and putting Thooft to his back, scoring 4 points total securing the major decision and making the score 22-23 Arrows.
Noah Mathiowetz, coming in at 172 for the Warriors, drew Finley Whipkey of the Arrows and went right to work scoring the first takedown and riding out the 1st period. Whipkey chose bottom in the 2nd and Mathiowetz scored on a nearfall right at the end of the period.
Choosing top in the third period Mathiowetz scored a 3 point nearfall with a crossface butcher which went to an armbar, then a skunked half for the pin bringing the warriors in the lead 28-23 over the Arrows.
Luke “IVY” Iverson, took Carlos Saenlovengraj for a point ride in the 1st period starting off with a single leg take down and slipping in an arm bar and a half on the way to the mat and looking for the pin. Carlos started to bleed. After every nearfall just before the pin Carlos would begin to bleed, stopping the match for blood time. Iverson held on at every point starting over and over again getting nearfalls then waiting for blood got to the second period starting on top got a knuckle roll half and Carlos submitted giving up the pin and the 6 team points to the warriors making the score 34-23.
The mighty Carson Klein took to the mat with Jackson Melcher and caught a single leg early but just couldn’t finish as Melcher defended with a whizzer and put him to the mat on his back scoring a nearfall. The 2nd period Klein starting on bottom earned his escape, but struggled to find his groove succumbing to another takedown and nearfall. Melcher starting on bottom in the third period seen Klein working hard on top giving up two stalling points before catching Klein and putting him to his back putting the Arrows in striking distance with a pin. (Arrows 29, Warriors 34) The Anchor Colby Kesteloot needing a win or at least a decision loss didn’t disappoint as he took Carlos Zepeda to the mat with the underhooks and finished him with a reverse headlock putting the Warriors up 40-29 The final dual of the night would be the Red Rock Central Falcons against the FMCC Warriors and this time Mason Kircher lead off the dual with a quick pin at 46 seconds against Bryson Marsh.
Kaston Clarke followed suit taking Keagen Steen the distance and only allowing a decision. (RRC 3, Warriors 6) Thomas Pruitt at 121lbs. took Marshall Willhite down with a go behind and rode out the entire 1st period looking for a turn, not giving up anything. The second period went much the same, as Pruitt scored circling out of referees position earning an escape then scored 2 on a textbook HI-C. Pruitt lost his steam as Willhite reversed at the end of the 2nd period, then again to start the third period. Pruitt, regaining some strength tied the score with an escape and in desperation looking for the win got caught in another takedown by Willhite losing by decision.
The Warriors scored 12 team points on forfeits at the 127 and 133 bouts with Aiden Lorenzen at 139 taking on Jonah Skarupaj scoring early in the period with a big lift with a HI-C and finished him with a butcher for the pin.
Lucas Kuball at 145 had a tough match with Andrew Pankonin, giving up the first takedown but quickly returning fire with an escape and a single leg to get the lead going into the 2nd period. Starting down in the 2nd period Kuball quickly earned an escape and a low single but succumbed to Pankonin’s attacks eventually dropping the match in an 8-11 decision.
Quintin Lewis had Carter Beranek and scored early with a go behind and rode out the first period. “Q” starting down in the second period wasted no time earning a reversal but gave up an escape looking for a turn. With about 20 seconds left in the second period “Q” scored on another takedown and this time locked up a nearside cradle and with a knee in the side scored the fall.
After Carson Lewis fell to Evan Bartholomaus, “IVY” Iverson came in to take on Quintyn Vold and suffered two takedowns and a nearfall before scoring a reversal in the second period. Catching an armbar and holding it tight as he put Vold on his back scored the fall.
Vincent Bray an eighth grader at 215, halfway through the second period put Colten Schaffran to his back after a long scramble with a headlock and squeezed hard for the pin.
With an open weight at 285 pounds the Falcons forfeited another 6 points to Colby Kesteloot of the Warriors ending the dual and sweeping the night with a 54-15 victory.
On the 15 and 16th the Warriors traveled to Redwood Falls for the Redwood River Riot and found some stiff competition, but still managed to put some wrestlers on the podium starting with Kaston Clarke at 107 who, after dropping his match in the first round, came back with 5 wins to secure 4th place.
Aiden Lorenzen in a loaded 139lb bracket found his way to 8th place.
Carson Klein, after dropping his first match of the weekend, wrestled back to earn 8th place.
Overall the Warriors as a team placed 24th out of 30 teams which is an improvement over last season.
