Last week our F/MCC Warriors had a home wrestling triangular against the Adrian/ Ellsworth Dragons, and the Springfield Tigers and performed very well. Although dropping one dual to the Dragons, the Warriors are in striking distance. With a couple of matches going the other way they would have had the sweep winning 51-9 over Springfield, and losing 34-15 with Adrian.

First up for the night were the Springfield Tigers as they had the longest distance to travel, and Mason Kirchner was the first wrestler to come out of the stable. Kirchner went right to work with a lateral drop, putting Jonny Schwartz on his back for a 3 point nearfall and an early 5 point lead. Two intentional cuts later Kirchner took a single leg from Schwartz and put him in a knuckle roll half for the pin securing an early bonus point lead for the warriors.

Next up was Thomas Pruitt who also dominated Cole Paplow scoring the first takedown on a single leg and putting Paplow on his back for the nearfall in the first period. The second period, starting on bottom, Pruitt sat out and turned in for a reversal. After an intentional cut Pruitt took him down again on an outside single, and rode out the period. Going into the third period with an 8-1 lead, Pruitt, starting from neutral, got into a little trouble giving up a takedown and a nearfall. From his back he was able to arch his back and get his hips over for a reversal, finishing the match 10-6 for a decision.

Next up to wrestle after 3 forfeits by Springfield was Denver Ash. Ash got in early on a low single and finished Colin Hansen off with a reverse half for the pin.

After forfeits to Alaric Wynia and Weston Kruger, Carson Lewis came to bat against Paytin Johnson. Carson, with a slide by secured the first take-down and had the lead going into the second, allowing an escape. Starting down, Lewis scored his escape point and these two fought for position for the duration of the second period. The third period saw some action, as Paytin scored out of bottom with a reversal and a nearfall. Lewis scored on a reversal of his own but wasn’t able to hold his position, giving up another reversal to Johnson eventually losing the match 6-9.

After a forfeit to Luke Iverson, both teams were open at 189 and Vincent Bray would show for the Warriors at 215 against the Tigers’ Tommy Leopold. Bray wrestled well, fighting into the third period where he had the lead with an escape in the second, but fell to Leopold with 42 seconds left.

Jaybin Quintero received a forfeit and the Warriors received a dual win 51-9 Next up was Adrian under the spotlight. Mason Kirchner at 107 led off for the Warriors against the Dragons’ dominant Logan Grahm, fighting hard through two periods of takedowns by Grahm. Mason, starting bottom in the third period scored on a reversal, but couldn’t hang on, eventually losing by pinfall with 9 seconds left.

Kaston Clarke, against David Anaya at 114, went much the same way, but Clarke held him to a major decision, only allowing 1 bonus team point to the Dragons.

At the 121 bout Truman Olsem was tough, but Moe Erdman was dominant, taking the match by technical fall and putting the Dragons up 14-0.

After Kaden Landsman was pinned by Travis Wiess in the 127 bout, Teague Meyer had Charger Erlandson. Teague drew first blood, scoring on a single leg, taking Erlandson out of bounds. Meyer got a stall warning, but didn’t allow Erlandson to escape and finished out the period 2-0. The second period Erlandson, starting on bottom, stood up and escaped the clutches of Meyer and scored on a deep single, going out of bounds. With a restart, Meyer jumped to his feet for the escape, turning to face Erlandson. Meyer got a front headlock and locked up a cradle but the referees didn’t see any control, so he wasn’t awarded with a takedown. The third period started with the score tied. Starting on bottom, all Meyer needed was an escape to win the match and he got it right away. Meyer finished the match on top with good defense holding on to his decision victory over Erlandson.

Aiden Lorenzen at 139 took Jackson Jenniges to the third period, wrestling very well, scoring on his high crotch takedowns, and single legs. Lorenzen was dominant throughout the match, only giving up a last second takedown by Jenniges, winning 11-6 Decision.

Lucas Kuball at 145 had Caleb Wolf and scored the first takedown and won the first period. Starting down in the second period, Kuball got out of position and off balance and gave up a reversal and 2 nearfalls. The third period neither wrestler got their offense going and the match went in favor of Wolf by decision.

Owen Olsem and Bruce Farinella at 152 began with Olsem scoring the first takedown. He rode out Farinella for the first period and started down in the second period, scoring an escape after Farinella was warned for stalling. The Third period, Olsem, starting on top, scored another point with Farinella stalling on bottom. Farinella scored on a reversal in the third, but it wasn’t enough, as Olsem held on for the decision win.

At 160 lbs Quintin Lewis and Rilee Heidebrink went scoreless for the first period, each wrestler looking for an opening. Starting the second period, we saw some action, as Heidebrink scored from bottom on an escape and Lewis took him down from a front headlock position catching a knee, switching to a double and didn’t have to fight a whizzer to bring Heidebrink to the mat for a take down. The third period, Lewis, starting from bottom, scored on a penalty point, then made his escape, and scored on another takedown. All Heidebrink could do was get another point on an escape, finishing the match 6-3 in a decision for Lewis and the Warriors.

Carson Lewis at 172 went up against the Dragons’ Micah Bullerman and athletically scored the first takedown on a solid single. Giving up an escape, Lewis finished out the period in the lead 2-1. Lewis, starting on bottom in the second, scored on an escape after a stall warning to Bullerman. Bullerman responded to a takedown attempt by Lewis, scrambling to a go-behind, winning the takedown. Lewis found his escape again on the edge of the mat putting them into the third period with Lewis in the lead 4-3. Bullerman started on bottom and earned his escape, tying the score and found a way through Lewis’ defense and scored a takedown and rode out the rest of the period for the 6-4 decision.

Luke Iverson at 189 scored quickly with a well executed duck under to a single, forcing Reese Morrison to his back. With the takedown, Morrison scrambled to his side, hipping over the top of Iverson, scoring a reversal and evening the score. The second period was all Morrison. Starting on bottom and earning his escape and a takedown, he went into the third period with a 5-2 lead. Iverson, starting on bottom in the third period, earned his escape after Morrison scored 2 on a tilt and finished the match with decision loss 7-3.

At 215 Carson Klein fought off Roberto Hernandez’s throw attempts and underhooks for two periods. Starting on bottom in the third period, Klein scored on an escape and fought Hernandez with good defense, finishing the match with a 1-0 decision win.

Jaren Winselman is a sturdy heavyweight and Colby Kesteloot had no fear taking him on. Winselman had his way with him and got frustrated as Kesteloot fought off his pinning attempts through the first period. Starting on top, Kesteloot couldn’t hold him down and Winselman found his way out, scoring an escape, and got a throw in putting Kesteloot on his back for the pin. The Adrian Dragons would win the dual 1534. This dual was a lot closer than the score would indicate. If the Warriors had won a couple of the closer matches and kept the scores a little closer, it could easily go the other way.

Until next time…..
