GREEN THUMB

By Arnold Krusemark Earlier this week we received an email from Burpees suggesting we plan our garden for this year including what to plant and where. They also mentioned crop rotation. Crop rotation is a subject all farmers are well aware of. That, along with enough and the right kind of fertilizer need to be considered along with what to plant and where.

In gardening, fertilizer may be an option rather than necessity. And the same for plant rotation. It is a good idea to change locations of our garden vegetables and maybe some flowers too. Doing so will also allow us to try some new seeds.

Remember some hybrids must be planted with like hybrids. As mentioned in the past that can mean we need at least two (or more) plots of sweet corn.

In our post we usually try to plant the new hybrids in a separate part of our gardening. That gives them a try.

And in planning remember which items need lots of space - long vines for one and quite tall (corn and some flowers). As for seed purchases, we should have mentioned in past columns one local store has leftover seeds from the past for a dime a package (at least when on sale). We should have stocked up on the spot. Then place an order for the new hybrids.

That should keep you busy for a while. The nice weather also has its drawbacks - the plants in the ground for winter might start growing. Then when nasty winter weather comes things might freeze off. We’ve had that in the past when the apple tree flowers did just that. No apples that year, but no worms the following.

Back inside the house, be sure to care for (and water) your house plants too.

Until next week.
