GREEN THUMB

By Arnold Krusemark The idea for this week’s column came when we noticed last week’s Wheel/Herald placed our column next to an ad for an indoor garden planter. Readers may remember we’ve discussed indoor gardens in the past. In some cases if you had an entire room you could set up the garden with its own heater, lighting system along with watering. That way you could grow fresh garden vegetables throughout the winter. If you didn’t have the entire room, you could use a deep cake pan or simply an unused flower pot. In any case that would produce some fresh garden produce during the winter.

For your winter garden you can produce considerable produce by careful choice of whatever you are growing. Be sure not to use plants with long vines. And maybe not corn either. This writer can remember some community gardens which did well. It was amazing how much could be grown even in small spaces (plot size 10x10 feet).

In other matters, its still a good idea to check the seed catalogues and place your orders soon. Some catalogues have discounts for large orders. As mentioned in past columns, seeds will be shipped now with started plants (including bushes and trees) shipped just in time for planting.

And, also, be sure to water your house plants this week too. Until next week.
