GREEN THUMB

By Arnold Krusemark Another week has passed in April. Our yard and gardening work continues but slowly. We do notice the first flowers of Spring. We’ve seen tulips in their beautiful flowers. And then our yard has dandelions too. Soon we will need the lawn mowed. For now the grass is growing. As mentioned in past columns most of us need to do some yard cleanup. Usually we also had our first bonfire to dispose of the dead branches which came down over winter. The occasional rains are nice too. Then we can have good things growing - not just flowers. And our garden needs work too. This includes clearing, plowing and then planting. And then to watch for our first garden produce - radishes of course.

One worry is still with the weather. We’ve had years when the fruit trees flowered out and a cold snap froze off the flowers. No apples or plums that year. And no apple worms the next. A magazine article reminds us of what we’ve said in this column several times: For trees and bushes follow the planting and caring directions. And always follow the fertilizer and spray directions.

As for local merchants there might be some late sales coming. One we’ve watched for has been rose bushes. This will keep you busy for the time being. And be sure to care for and water your house plants too. Until next week.
