The MCC Rebel Girls Basketball team has been trying to claw their way back to the 500 mark this season, after an early five-game losing streak. The Rebels were hoping to take another step toward that number with a win over HLOF on Thursday night. The Rebels and the Coyotes met earlier this season in Fulda and the Rebels got their second win of the year. The Rebels losing streak would begin after that game. The Coyotes are still looking for their first win of the year as they have begun the season with 10 straight losses. The Rebels would get one win away from 500 with a win on Thursday night.
The Rebels dominated this game by playing very good defense, forcing turnovers and closing out quickly on shooters. The Rebels offense wasn’t the prettiest in the world but the MCC forwards would lead their way to a win. The Rebels forced the Coyotes into 20 firsthalf turnovers and they held the Coyotes to just seven first-half points. HLOF scored just four points from the field in the first half with the team making three free throws. Jayda Hellewell and Thea Schneider each scored 8 points for the Rebels outscoring the Coyotes by themselves. The Rebels led at the halftime break 24 to 7.
The second half would see the Coyotes outscore the Rebels by one over the first six minutes of the half. The Rebels got going over the middle six minutes of the second half as MCC extended their lead to 30 points. The Rebel student section was treated to the news that school on Friday was canceled during the second half to a loud round of applause. Jayda Hellewell scored nine points in the half but only scored one basket from the field. Seven of her nine points came at the free throw line. The Rebels would get the win 54 to 21.
The team comparisons in this game were one-sided. The Coyotes turned the ball over 33 times compared to the Rebels 22. In shooting statistics, the Rebels made 35% of their shots while the Coyotes made just 13%. MCC made 69% of their free throws while HLOF made 47%. Jayda Hellewell led the Rebels with 17 points while Thea Schneider scored 11. Ava Deacon scored 6 points in the second half and Kylie Knakmuhs added 5 points in the closing minutes.
The Rebels will open the week with a pair of games Monday at Lakeview and Tuesday at home against RRC.
