The Rebel Girls week came to an end on Friday night (Februar 9) in Westbrook. MCC finished the season with four straight road games and 3 of the 4 games are against the top teams in the Red Rock Conference. The first of those games came against the Chargers who have one of the most experienced teams in the area and one of the best shooting teams when things are right. The Chargers were right on Friday.

The game started like many Rebel games with the MCC defense holding the opponent in check while the Rebels scored a couple of early baskets. In this game, the Rebels would fall behind 8 -7 with Ava Deacon scoring 6 points for the Rebels and Jayda Hellewell making one free throw. The Rebels were in the game and were closing out on shooters and playing well. The problem was, the Rebels would allow a 25-0 run the rest of the first half. MCC failed to score the final nearly ten minutes of the half. While MCC wasn’t scoring, Izzy Klumper and Leah Carter took over. Klumper scored 11 points, including 3 three-point shots and Leah Carter scored 8 points around the rim. Both players scored more points than the Rebels total. The Chargers led at the half 33 to 7.

The second half would see the Rebels score more points, but they also didn’t get back in the game. Kylie Knakmuhs scored 5 second-half points including a three-point basket. Ava Deacon added 5 points in the second half with a couple of early baskets and a free throw. The Rebels only scored 17 points in the second half as a team, while Izzy Klumper scored 11 points on her own. The running clock would start at the nine-minute mark, so the game flew by. The Chargers got the win 62 to 24.

The Chargers dominated this game because they could score and the Rebels couldn’t. With MCC allowing a 25 to nothing run to end the first half, they didn’t give themselves a chance to come back in the second half. Izzy Klumper finished the game with 22 points while the Rebels only scored 24 total points. MCC was led by Ava Deacon with 11 points. No one else had more than 5. MCC will finish the regular season with games against SWC, Edgerton, and RRC before the playoffs begin.
