Area farm couples are invited to spend a day off the farm together attending the Farm Couples Retreat Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Evergreen Lane Events near Redwood Falls. The event is hosted by Southwest Initiative Foundation.
Led by renowned farm mental health expert Ted Matthews, the retreat focuses on helping couples improve their relationship communication skills and reconnect. Matthews has more than 20 years of experience in farm mental health support and was awarded the 2023 Minnesota Rural Health Lifetime Achievement Award.
The day will include insights to strengthen mental well-being and relationships, practical tools and strategies for coping with stress and burnout, nourishing food, laughter and good company in a supportive environment.
“Our vision at the foundation is that all our community members thrive. Farmers are so good at caring for crops and animals, but that tending doesn’t always extend to their own wellbeing. We want to encourage them to take a break and spend time with their partner to recharge and reconnect,” said Amy Brustuen, Southwest Initiative Foundation Youth and Community Program Officer and the day’s co-host.
Registration is free and limited to the first 16 couples, with a registration deadline of Feb. 10. Attendees must live or work in the foundation’s southwest Minnesota region, which includes the counties of Big Stone, Chippewa, Cottonwood, Jackson, Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, McLeod, Meeker, Murray, Nobles, Pipestone, Redwood, Renville, Rock, Swift and Yellow Medicine.
Registration is available at bit.ly/RuralRetreatFeb23.
