The MCC Rebel Girls traveled to Marshall on Saturday morning for an 11:00 am showdown with one of the top teams in the Camden Conference the Lac Qui Parle Valley Eagles. The Rebels entered the game with just 1 win on the season and were riding a 17 game losing streak. The Eagles had 17 wins on the season and a four-game winning streak. The Rebels were the heavy underdogs in this game and the Eagles were not going to allow the Rebels to make a game of it.

The Eagles would come out strong scoring 44 first-half points. The best thing a favored team can do when playing a heavy underdog is to take control early. Put pressure on the team and strike fast. The Eagles did that and by halftime, the game was all but over. MCC trailed 44 to 10 at the half. The second half went by quickly as both coaches got in their reserves early and got them plenty of playing time. That was more important for the Rebels than anything with games coming up on Monday and Tuesday this week meaning 4 games in 5 days. The Eagles would win this one easy 60 to 18.

The Eagles made 52% of their shots in the game compared to the Rebels 21%. LQPV made 6 of 13 three-point shots while the Rebels were 0-6. To complete the sweep of the shooting numbers the Eagles made 6 of 9 free throws while MCC made just 2 of 12. MCC also turned the ball over 20 times compared to LQPV’s 8.

MCC was led in scoring and rebounding by freshman Thea Scheider who scored 4 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Jayda Hellewell also scored 4 for the Rebels. The Eagles had three players score in double figures led by Tori Burgarden who finished with 17.

The Rebels will have another tough week coming up with games at home against HBC, TMB, and Adrian Ellsworth.
