Muriel Loraine Veenhuis, 93, passed away on May 7, 2026. She was born on July 4, 1932 in Sanborn, IA to Lawrence and Theresa Glawe, and grew up in Slayton, MN alongside her siblings Henry (Eleanor), Virginia (Dick Portmann), and Judy (Leon Betz). Muriel developed her love for reading and learning at Country School District 77 and then at Slayton High School. She studied to be a teacher at Lamberton Teachers Normal School and later taught in the Dovray Country School and Avoca School.

In 1952 she married Jim Veenhuis, and they lived in Georgia and North Carolina while Jim was in the Army. In 1954 they returned to Minnesota and farmed north of Slayton. Muriel was a housewife for many years and later worked at Production Credit Association and then at Burtzel Accounting. She was a member at the Slayton United Methodist Church. Muriel and Jim had four children: Nancy (Michael Rodolico), Jim/Jamey (Kathy), Bob (Doreen), and David (Dawn), ten grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Muriel lived a long, full life doing exactly what she wanted— playing Bridge, baking pies, reading novels, and traveling with her husband. A highlight of their travels was when she made her television premier on The Price is Right!

Muriel was preceded in death by her husband (Jim), parents (Lawrence and Theresa), brother (Henry), sister-in-law (Eleanor) and many dear friends. A celebration of life in Muriel’s honor will be held at the home of Jim and Kathy Veenhuis. Details to be announced at a later time.
